Complicated Legendary Rule Question

Asked by IdRatherBPlayingYuGiOh 3 years ago

I'm unfamiliar with the all of the Legendary Rule interactions as I am still fairly new to the game, and had this situation today that I didn't know how it would resolve.

If I had Soul Warden + Karlov of the Ghost Council + Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord on the board and played a second Karlov of the Ghost Council from hand, do the Soul Warden + Karlov of the Ghost Council abilities trigger before the Legendary Rule kicks in?

Do both Karlov of the Ghost Council get the tokens from Soul Warden triggering, and am I able to respond with Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord ability to sacrifice one of the Karlov of the Ghost Council before one is sent to the graveyard from the Legendary Rule?

Karlov of the Ghost Council and Soul Warden both have triggered abilities. These will trigger any time their condition is met, but wait to be put on the stack.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord has an activated ability. You can activate an ability when you have priority.

Both activated and triggered abilities go on the stack and wait to resolve. When all players pass in succession the topmost object on the stack resolves and then there is another round of priority before the next object on the stack resolves.

The legendary rule is a State-Based Action (SBA). They do not use the stack and can not be responded to.

Whenever a player would receive priority SBAs are checked and performed until none are performed. Then all triggered abilities waiting to go on the stack are put on the stack. This procedure is repeated until no SBAs are performed and no triggers are put on the stack. Then the player receives priority.

What happens in your scenario, assuming one opponent, is:

  1. The second Karlov enters the battlefield.

  2. Soul Warden triggers and waits for the trigger to be put on the stack.

  3. SBAs are checked and one of the Karlovs are put into the graveyard.

  4. SBAs are checked and nothing happens.

  5. The Soul Warden trigger goes on the stack.

  6. SBAs are checked and nothing happens.

  7. The game checks for triggers waiting to go on the stack and there are none.

  8. You receive priority. (This is the point where you could activate Jarad, but you only have 1 Karlov.)

  9. Step 6 and 7 again.

  10. Your opponent receives priority.

  11. Assuming nothing was added to the stack, Soul Warden's trigger resolves.

  12. Karlov triggers.

  13. Step 4-11 again replacing "soul warden trigger" with "karlov trigger".
