color identity of Bringer of the Black Dawn

Asked by abenz419 9 years ago

Is Bringer of the Black Dawn black? or does that alternate cost make him 5 colored?

They are 5 color. House rules can override this though. There is good reason for it.

Color identity considers all colored mana symbols on the card (except those in reminder text, as is the case with extort), plus color. Bringer of the Black Dawn has all five colored mana symbols in its text box, so its color identity is all five colors.

Some playgroups house-rule that the Bringers have monocolor identities, but this is not standing rule.

yeah that's what I figured. I mean it's obviously a black card with black flavor, like a few people pointed out in gufymike's link, but I figured the way the rules were stated that it would be 5 colored. Thanks

I'm not sure if I'm right, judging from all the previous responses, but this is how I learned Magic.

Color Identity is based on the Mana Cost of the creature. You can shortcut this by looking at the color of the card frame. Artifacts with colored abilities are still colorless.

I justify this with Crackling Triton . He is a blue creature with a red ability, but he is not red. The Triton can kill a Master of Waves , which has protection from red. This was done at draft in Pro Tour Theros, passed by pro players and Level 5 judges, so don't tell me that this interaction is illegal.

(If you want to see watch Ben Stark in draft at PT Theros)

On a side note, for the purposes of building Commander/EDH decks, the card is considered multicolored due to the nature of the format.

@RikukiR: We're talking specifically about color identity, which only applies to the Commander format.
