The CMC of a fuse card is the combined CMC of both halves of the card.

In this case because of how it's worded on Mercurial Chemister it counts both CMCs and counts the total.

The CMCs are only considered separately when one half is being cast or for something like one of the counter spell cards worded "counter target spell with converted mana cost X"

@Bellock86: That's partially incorrect.

In all zones except the stack, split cards have two converted mana costs -- one for each half. Mercurial Chemister's ability will see two CMCs, and it will deal 3 damage and 2 damage in one instance.

When a split card is on the stack as a spell, it has the CMC of whichever half was cast. If the card has the fuse ability and the spell was fused, then its CMC is the combined CMC of both halves.
