Asked by rufio1406 8 years ago

lets say my opponent has 5 red creatures on the board all mana tapped. They cast Stoke the Flames at me I respond with Clash of Wills for 1. Can they tap the fifth creature to stop clash?

Convoke lets your creatures help pay to cast a spell, but the effect from Clash of Wills isn't part of the cost to cast Stoke the Flames. Stoke has already been paid for, and now Clash's effect wants its own payment. Convoke can't be used to pay for Clash's effect.

Convoke allows you to tap creatures to pay for part of the cost of a spell. It does not allow you to tap creatures to pay for any costs in general. The optional cost levied by Clash of Wills is a cost posed to you during the resolution of Clash of Wills. It is not an additional cost to cast something, nor is it a cost increasing effect, so convoke cannot be used to pay for it.
