Clarification on Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider with proliferate and both -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters

Asked by CamraMaan 1 year ago

I know that -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters on the same creature cancel each other out, but is this optional, or mandatory? Say I have Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider in play, my opponent has a base 2/2 creature with two +1/+1 counters on it, and he blocks my 1/1 infect creature with it. Vorinclex will double the -1/-1 counters put on his creature, which will cancel out the two +1/+1 counters. But say I want to proliferate and put more -1/-1 counters on the creature? Do I have the option of keeping both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on the creature, so that I can pursue proliferation shenanigans? Thanks in advance!

It is a non-optional effect that happens as soon as state-based actions are checked. Soz.
