Clarification on auras

Asked by SorcerersBone 9 years ago

May sound stupid, but do auras target?and if they do, can you Redirect it? (assuming it's a legal target)

It's not a stupid question, there's a lot of stuff not explained explicitly in Magic. That's why we're here!

Yes they require a target as a spell, and yes they may be Redirect 'd.

Here's the rule on Auras:

  • 303.4a An Aura spell requires a target, which is defined by its enchant ability

This only applies to auras as a spell on the stack; if an aura somehow enters the battlefield by other means, it does not require targeting. So you could get a Debilitating Injury on a White Knight like this, for example.

GreatSword Incorrect. Part of the protection is the "can't be equipped/enchanted by" clause. When you return an aura to the battlefield you can only attach it to a legal target. White Knight is not a legal target for Debilitating Injury . You can get around hexproof and shroud because those only restrict the targeting part and since you're not targeting the creatures themselves are legal targets. Protection however stops the whole enchanting aspect and so makes the creature an illegal target.

Yep, sorry, thanks for that.
