Chandra Pyromaster/Wild Ricochet...?

Asked by dslayer1235 9 years ago

Chandra, Pyromaster hits her ultimate, lets say you want to copy Wild Ricochet 3 times and then cast a spell to then declare the target of the 3 copies of Wild Ricochet So in other words, can you take the copies and cast them any time you could an instant if it is in fact an instant... Sorry for my horrible wording.

This won't work for multiple reasons.

  1. You have to declare the targets of Wild Ricochet immediately. Since planeswalker abilities are sorcery speed, there won't be any spells on the stack for Wild Ricochet to copy, so you can't even cast Wild Ricochet .

  2. You have to declare the targets of Wild Ricochet immediately(as it's cast), so even if you cast some other spell after the fact, it's too late to target it with Wild Ricochet

It doesn't state when you cast the exiled instant or sorcery you have chosen with her ultimate. Do you in fact keep the copied spell until later or is it a must play immediately? For example, a friend of mine uses Spelltwine and saves the exiled instant normally (a counter of some sort) for a later time, is that allowed?

This is not allowed. Those spells must be cast immediately, if at all. You can see the difference in wording of cards like Psychic Intrusion . It contains the phrase "for as long as it remains exiled" exactly for that reason, to allow you to save it for later.

I summon Epochalyptik to help fine tune this answer...

So if Wild Ricochet was the chosen card, I could cast an instant to then be on the stack before Wild Ricochet Resolves?

This is the relevant rule you are looking for:

608.2f If an effect gives a player the option to pay mana, he or she may activate mana abilities before taking that action. If an effect specifically instructs or allows a player to cast a spell during resolution, he or she does so by putting that spell on top of the stack, then continuing to cast it by following the steps in rules 601.2ah, except no player receives priority after its cast. The currently resolving spell or ability then continues to resolve, which may include casting other spells this way. No other spells can normally be cast and no other abilities can normally be activated during resolution.

You wouldn't be able to do that because during its casting, you have to choose targets and they already must be there. If you can't choose targets for it, you can't cast it at all.

And you can't choose Wild Ricochet , then cast an instant, then cast Ricochet, because during that effects resolution, you can only cast spells that the effect specifies. Nobody gets priority during its resolution, so you can't do anything besides what the effect allows you to do.

FYI: "summoning" someone when you already have perfectly serviceable, well-explained answers is kind of rude to the other users who already posted here to help you.

There's no reason to summon me. Sam_I_am and Absinthman gave perfectly correct answers.

Also, what Rhadamanthus said.
