Chance Encounter (multiple upkeep triggers)?

Asked by jspydur 8 years ago

So its the end of my opponents turn and I have Chance Encounter in play with 9 counters on it along with Chaotic Goo and Planar Chaos . My turn begins. Can I set the order the abilities trigger so that I can flip a coin for Planar Chaos and Chaotic Goo before the Chance Encounter would trigger so that I can win the game? Also for whats its worth, errata on Chaotic Goo changed its wording to trigger at the beginning of your upkeep.

Usually yes, you can stack triggers that would go onto the stack at the same time any way you want, but in this case there's a complicating factor: Chance Encounter's upkeep trigger is written with something called an "invervening 'if' clause". A trigger with an intervening "if" checks the condition both at the time it would trigger and as it would start to resolve. If the condition isn't true at the time it would trigger then it doesn't trigger at all. In your example Chance Encounter doesn't trigger at the beginning of this turn's upkeep because it doesn't have 10 or more counters.

Unfortunately no. Chance Encounter's second ability has what is called an "Intervening If" clause. This means it will check for the trigger condition before it triggers and again when it resolves. If, at the beginning of your upkeep, there are not 10 or more counters on it, that ability won't trigger at all, to be stacked in a beneficial way.

Were it not for that, it would work the way you describe.

Thanks for the explanation.
