Cavern of Souls naming Shapeshifter?

Asked by Adraxian 4 years ago

Can you play Cavern of Souls and name shapeshifter to make all of your creatures uncounterable? From my understanding Shapeshifter is every creature type, so I should be able to play my Beast, Dragon, Human, etc. and if I use the Cavern that card shouldn't be countered right?

From my understanding Shapeshifter is just a creature type like Zombie and Goblins are. They're just a single creature type. Where they obtain all creature types is when Changeling is introduced into the sub-type.

Please link cards in your question using double square brackets, like so:

[[Cavern of Souls]]

Cavern of Souls

This will not work the way you want.

"Shapeshifter" is a creature subtype, just like Zombie, Goblin, Horse, God, etc. It is not inherently "every creature type." You are thinking of the keyword ability "Changeling," which makes that particular card every creature type. You'll find this on cards like Chameleon Colossus , Blades of Velis Vel , Changeling Outcast , and Mistform Ultimus (though the Ultimus does not have the keyword, but it does have the ability's rules text). Most Changeling cards are Shapeshifters, but not all Shapeshifters have Changeling.

You can't choose "Changeling" for the Cavern of Souls because it is a keyword, not a creature type. If you choose "Shapeshifter," only your creature cards with the actual creature type "Shapeshifter" (including all creatures with the Changeling keyword) will be uncounterable.

What you could do is use a card like Arcane Adaptation or Conspiracy as they effect all of your creatures, even those not in play yet. Then use Cavern of Souls because every creature you cast will also be that creature type you chose.
