Casting spells in combat

Asked by WorkAround 8 years ago

I attack with Monastery Swiftspear. Opposing player says no blocks. I then cast Lightning Helix making Swiftspear 2/3 my opponent Counters it with Mana Leak. Now My opponent Casts Murderous Cut to kill swiftspear before damage. The problem is that he exiles the Mana Leak that was being cast a second ago.

My question is does he get priority to Cast the Cut after the Mana Leak resolves?

Any time a spell or ability resolves from the stack, each player will have a chance to cast a spell or activate an ability. Your opponent can indeed cast a Murderous Cut, exiling his Mana Leak from the graveyard.

Note: your opponent cannot cast both spells in immediate succession from each other. He must wait for priority to be passed to him again from you once mana leak resolves.

That note is only true if the opponent must exile Mana Leak.

An instant or sorcery spell is put into its owner's graveyard as the last step in its resolution process. Mana Leak will not be in its owner's graveyard until it finishes resolving or until it is countered.

Now, your opponent can certainly retain priority and cast multiple spells in succession, but the above still holds. So your opponent must resolve Mana Leak, then cast Murderous Cut if he or she wants to delve exiling Mana Leak.
