Can you play Golgari Rot Farm as the first land of the game?

Asked by Aethaleon 9 years ago

Can Golgari Rot Farm be played as your first land, or is returning a land you control to your hand a cost in order to play it and thus can't ever be played on the first turn?

when it enters the battlefield you have to return a land to your hand. if this is your only land, then it will have to go back to your hand.

Returning a land to your hand is not a cost for playing Golgari Rot Farm . It reads, "When Golgari Rot Farm enters the battlefield, return a land you control to its owner's hand." This is a triggered ability that only occurs when the land enters the battlefield, meaning that you can play it as your first land, though you will likely have to return itself to your hand.

Not a direct answer to your question, but an interesting card to combo bounce lands with is Amulet of Vigor . There was a guy at the Modern Pro Tour for Born of the Gods who had a deck built around abusing these bounce lands. You can see it here.

I don't know how he placed in the tournament overall, but I thought it was a really clever deck.

Amulet Combo was actually known well prior to that Pro Tour. His particular deck did make some interesting innovations.
