Can you have more than 5 targets with Remedy or similar cards

Asked by TheGameV 8 years ago

Remedy reads "any number of target creatures and/or players, divided as you choose".

So can i have more than 5 targets and just dont prevent any damage from some of them.

And use this to clear an opponents board with Dismiss into Dream or activate an heroic ability on more than 5 creatures.

It sure sounds like you could have any number of targets, however note the Gatherer Rulings: 04.10.2004: You choose the targets and you choose how to divide up the 5 damage on announcement.

That sounds to me like you announce which targets you prevent damage to, and how many damage you prevent, meaning you'd only get to announce creatures and players as targets you actually assign damage to be prevented to.

In contrast to that, cards like Cauldron Haze allow you to do what you want, and possibly providing a better protection effect as a bonus, just as an additional note.

When you are dividing something you can not target more things than the number that is being divided.

601.2d If the spell requires the player to divide or distribute an effect (such as damage or counters) among one or more targets, the player announces the division. Each of these targets must receive at least one of whatever is being divided.

Interestingly Fireball and similar effects that distribute on their own can target more than the amount being distributed because the restriction is only on when a player is dividing amongst targets.

"yes, but what is the point" to what? If you are answering his question then I encourage you to read the last sentence of the OP for the point and the rule I quoted to see that the answer is actually "no".

If you are asking what is the point to target more things than the damage done with Fireball when it rounds down, again read the last sentence of the OP. Triggering any number of heroic abilities for 1 mana each is pretty good, and with Dismiss into Dream forcing sacrifice of any number of creatures for 1 mana each is pretty good. In each case you would cast Fireball with X=0 and just pay for extra targets

Can't you just say "I prevent 0 damage from this target creature."?

No, according to rule 601.2d which I quoted above but will quote again:

601.2d If the spell requires the player to divide or distribute an effect (such as damage or counters) among one or more targets, the player announces the division. Each of these targets must receive at least one of whatever is being divided.

Damage prevention is what is being distributed and each target must receive at least one damage prevention.
