Can you flash in anti-draw in response to Forgotten Creation?

Asked by Sloanan 7 years ago

So I'm playing some EDH with a buddy and he's using a Sheoldred deck and I'm playtesting some Grimgrin zombie tribal crap. I've got a Forgotten Creation out and he's got a Vedalken Orrery out. Upkeep triggers and I choose to discard my hand & draw a new one. He flashes in a Maralen of the Mornsong in response to the discard and says I can't draw the cards.

I'm 80% sure he can't do that since the discarding isn't an activated ability, so there's no reaction priority, right? Maybe when the upkeep ability is first on the stack, but since I've already discarded the ability is underway, correct? Or is it a triggered ability dependent on when I discard?

Thanks for any help on this.

Other than keyword abilities, each ability is its own paragraph. The discard and draw is all one ability on Forgotten Creation. So there is no chance to respond after you choose to discard your hand. Only if it was multiple abilities then there would be a round of priority between the two.

You are correct. The discard and draw are part of the same ability. Because players don't have priority while something is resolving, your opponent can't interrupt the resolution to do something else (besides, a spell that's allowed to be put onto the stack as a result of a resolving spell or ability won't begin to resolve until after the current resolution is compete).

Your opponent needs to choose whether to cast his or her spell before you begin resolving your ability. Once the resolution process begins (assuming you gave your opponent a chance to respond), it's too late to take further actions. Your opponent won't know whether you're going to discard or not until the ability is resolving.

Sounds good, guys. Thanks for the help. I always give priority when abilities are going through, so if he did it beforehand I wouldn't care (cuz then I just wouldn't discard, of course), BUT he specifically said "after you discard, I'm going to flash her in." That answers it!
