Can you Finale of Devastation for Walking Ballista?

Asked by UpperDeckerTaco 3 years ago

If I were to cast Finale of Devastation for X = 10+, and I go get Walking Ballista, will Ballista get the +X/+X when it enters the battlefield or will it die before the +X/+X matters?

The Walking Ballista gets +X/+X and lives.

A creature dying for having 0 or less toughness is one of the game's state-based actions. SBAs are checked right before each time a player would get priority to take an action. In your example, SBAs wouldn't be checked until Finale of Devastation is completely finished resolving, at which point the Ballista is a 10/10.

It's important to remember still that the +X/+X are not counters, so they cannot be removed for damage through Walking Ballista's ability. Also, as the pump goes away at end of turn, it will go to the graveyard if it doesn't have a counter on it by then.

Neotrup the reason I asked was to end the game with infinite mana. Get ballista into play, and then use the infinite mana to put counters on it. The goal is to not pass the turn.
