Can Stifle block re-enter the battlefield blink effects?

Asked by mtgirem 9 years ago

Cards like Banishing Light when removed will allow the permanent to return to the battlefield. Can I Stifle that if someone uses a Disenchant to remove the Banishing Light ?

Also for something like Roon of the Hidden Realm , can I use Stifle to block the reenter the battlefield part prior to the next end step? If so, is it exiled for the rest of the game or only delayed another end step?

Thanks

You can't stop the return of the card exiled by Banishing Light , and you can't stop or delya the return of a card exiled by Roon of the Hidden Realm . The ability has a duration, and as soon as that duration ("until X leaves the battlefield" "at the beginning/end of the X step") ends, the card will automatically return.

Also, here's a Gatherer ruling for Banishing Light : The exiled card returns to the battlefield immediately after Banishing Light leaves the battlefield. Nothing happens between the two events, including state-based actions. Banishing Light and the returned card arent on the battlefield at the same time.

  1. With Banishing Light you cannot Stifle it because there is no trigger. Banishing Light creates an effect with a duration and only has one triggered ability that triggers upon entering the battlefield. When Banishing Light leaves the battlefield the effect ends and the creature returns instantly without using the stack. A good comparison is Oblivion Ring which you can Stifle as it has a ETB trigger and a LTB trigger.

  2. You can Stifle Roon of the Hidden Realm 's return it to the battlefield ability. His ability exiles the creature and makes a delayed trigger which will trigger at the beginning of the next end step. The creature will be exiled forever. This is because the ability says "next" end step. This means that once the ability triggers it will never trigger again.

Triggers are denoted by the words "at" "when" or "whenever". Banishing Light doesn't use those words to return the creature but Roon of the Hidden Realm says "at".

Thank you very much. I figured they were two different mechanics. That's really a neat trick for Roon then.
