Can nevermore be a counterspell?
Asked by anne 8 years ago
Sigarda's Aid + Nevermore gives it flash. Now i want to know what happends if i cast nevermore in response to a casting of a Rancor just as an example. does nevermore go on the stack changing the rules so that rancor cannot be cast and thus doesnt resolve or since it has been cast already nothing happends and rancor gets cast?

If a spell is already on the stack, then it has already been cast. The casting process is what puts a card onto the stack in the first place.
Putting Nevermore onto the battlefield won't retroactively undo a cast. All it can do is present players from casting the specified card in the future.

Worth mentioning also that Sigarda's Aid doesn't give Nevermore flash in the first place, since it only affects Auras and Equipments, and Nevermore is just a vanilla enchantment.

The only way that Nevermore could do something close to countering a spell would be flashing it in in response to an activation of Isochron Scepter.

It can still resolve as normal. Nevermore only says it can't be cast. Rancor has already been cast before Nevermore existed.
