Can Moonsnare Prototype tap artifact cards with tap abilities, and also have those abilities trigger?

Asked by WillDa_BEAST 2 years ago

For example can Moonsnare Prototype be tapped and then tap a treasure token to create 1 colorless mana as well as one mana of any color.

Another example would be the interaction between Moonsnare Prototype and a card like Reckoner Bankbuster Could i tap Moonsnare Prototype then pay the two colorless and tap Reckoner Bankbuster to get 1 colorless mana and draw a card removing one of the charge counters from Reckoner Bankbuster.

is always a cost you have to pay for specifically the ability you want to pay with it. So while you could tap any artifact for the second part of Prototype's ability's cost, it won't trigger any other abilities.

There are cards that trigger when they get tapped, but these always word it as a triggered ability, so they use words like "when" or "whenever".

You can't pay multiple costs with one action. If you're tapping an artifact to pay for Moonsnare Prototype's mana ability, you can't use the tap to pay for anything else, any more than you could tap Adarkar Wastes to add both and to your mana pool.

In the same way, you couldn't sacrifice one creature to activate both Ashnod's Altar and Altar of Dementia.

Moonsnare Prototype is a good card, but not in that way. seshiro_of_the_orochi and Polaris are right. What he can do is tap treasure tokens for mana without having to sacrifice them, or tap thopters or servos for mana. He's kind of like a mana dork for artifact decks, and has the greatest utility in getting mana from things that would otherwise not give it.
