Can I use a Battlefield Thamaturge+Return the ranks?

Battlefield Thaumaturge states that for each creature it targets the spell costs 1 less. Return to the Ranks states that it targets the creatures in the graveyard, is this interaction legitimate or am I wrong, would that not work?

It doesn't work that way.
When an effect references a permanent type without saying "[type] card," then it references only permanents of that type. Remember that permanents are objects on the battlefield.
Battlefield Thaumaturge provides a cost reduction for each creature your spell targets. This means creature permanents; creature cards in other zones don't count.
