Can I tap an attacking creature with Vigilance?

Asked by Thermoptic 5 years ago

Say i want to tap when attacking with a creature that have vigilance, is this ok? Or is this not possible? Maybe want to use Harvest Season and have as many creatures as possible tapped.

The http://mtg.wikia.com/wiki/Vigilance says "It is a static ability that means the affected creature does not need to tap when attacking." The text says not need, so I guess i can attack an tap as usual if I choose to do so?

Well, the reminder text for vigilance says "Attacking doesn't cause this creature to tap" (rule 702.20b, https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Vigilance) so I don't think so.

No, the text on the card specifically says: "Attacking doesn't cause this creature to tap." Tapping to attack is not a choice or cost, but a result of your decision to attack with that creature, and if the creature has vigilance, this just doesn't happen. You can't choose to tap it as you declare it as an attacker.

like others have said, you can't choose to tap a creature when you declare it as an attacker. During that step it either does or does not tap.

However, an untapped attacking creature (such as one with vigilance) could still be tapped after declaring it as an attacker by way of a cost or ability of another card.

Cards with convoke (ie Stoke the Flames) or a card like Thassa's Ire come to mind.
