Can I exile a card with Ruin Rat even if it is the creature that it blocked and has been targeted with Supernatural Stamina

Asked by redkjames 6 years ago

I blocked a creature with Ruin Rat then they cast Supernatural Stamina on said creature, is it possible to exile that creature when it dies.

Yes. Because Supernatural Stamina says when this creature dies, return it to the battlefield tapped under its owners control. Ruin Rat will still die and go to the graveyard, which will trigger its ability, then it will return to the battlefield tapped under its owners control.

No the other creature was the one targeted with Supernatural Stamina

It depends on who's turn it is due to APNAP order of putting triggers on the stack.

If it's your turn and you're attacking with the Rat and they block and cast their spell.. both abilities trigger at the same time, however since you're the activate player, your trigger goes on the stack first, then the opponent's trigger goes on the stack above yours. Your opponent's will resolve first, and yours will fizzle for lack of a legal target on resolution.

If it's your opponent's turn, and you block with the rat and stuff, both abilities trigger. Since the opponent is the active player, their trigger goes on the stack first, then yours on top. Your trigger resolves first, exiling the creature before it can return to the battlefield.

  1. both creatures die at the same time, when combat damage is dealt.
  2. the Supernatural Stamina trigger goes on the stack.
  3. the Ruin Rat trigger goes on the stack.
  4. Ruin Rat resolves, exiling the creature.

TL;DR: Yes, you can.

I think that the title and the question are asking 2 different things. My answer responded to the scenario outlined in the actual question, not the title. Please clarify so that we can more accurately give you the ruling :)

The title and question are asking the same thing, just worded differently.

Rat blocks an attacking creature that has been targeted by Supernatural Stamina, both die. Can he then exile that same attacking creature from the graveyard via Rat's trigger, before the creature returns to the battlefield.

Answer is yes, you can, because your trigger will resolve first.

So someone told me that the active player gets to choose which resolves first

August 13, 2017 4:31 p.m.

That's not entirely correct.

The only time the active player, or any player for that matter, chooses in what order triggers resolve is if that one player controls all those triggers. Otherwise, they are put on the stack in Active Player, Non-Active Player order.

That someone is mistaken. Players only get to choose in what order THEIR triggers go on the stack; they can't stack your triggers. The active player's triggers go on the stack before the defending player's if they both trigger at the same time (like in your case).
