can i discard the card i drew with Geth's Grimoire using the Looter il-Kor ability?

Asked by mathijsderouck 6 years ago

hi guys,

i'm playing Looter il-Kor in a casual deck that also includes Geth's Grimoire and Specter's Shroud.

What happens:

  1. main phase: i put the Geth's Grimoire in play

  2. main phase: i equip Looter il-Kor with the Specter's Shroud,

  3. attack phase: i attack

  4. my buddy doesn't have a shadow creature in play, so my Looter il-Kor isn't blocked and does 2 damage

  5. i draw 2 cards (one from Looter il-Kor, one from Geth's Grimoire) and i discard one of them + my buddy discards one card (due to Specter's Shroud).

  6. My buddy tells me I'm not allowed to discard the card I drew with Geth's Grimoire.

  7. I'm saying: wtf, i drew them at the same time so i can choose the sequence of the effects!

can anyone tell me who is correct, me or my buddy, or in other words: am i allowed to discard the Geth's Grimoire card?

Both of you are correct.

When Looter hits, you have the option to order the two triggers (from looter and spectre's shroud).

If you put the trigger from shroud on top of the stack, it will resolve first and cause the opponent to discard a card, which will in turn trigger Grimoire and you will draw a card. This is all before the trigger from looter even has a chance to resolve. If you order the triggers this way, you will draw an extra card before the looter effect and will be able to choose to discard the extra card with the looter effect.

If you put the looter trigger on top, the reverse will happen. You draw and discard first, then the opponent will discard, triggering grimoire and you will draw.

You are technically correct.

Since you control all abilities triggering all at once, you choose how they go into the stack.

Here is the scenario you wanted to happen.

Specter's Shroud resolves first, opponent discards.

Triggers Geth's Grimoire and resolves before Looter il-Kor's ability resolves. Draw a card.

Then finally Looter il-Kor's ability resolves, draw then discard.

Keep in mind that while an ability is resolving, it has to completely resolve before you can activate an ability or cast spell.
