Can I counter a counterspell with Ricochet Trap?
Asked by dantekratos 9 years ago
Does a counter that's says "counter target spell" be countered with Ricochet Trap?I'm not sure if the target from counter target spell works this way.
thanks in advance

...Why would anyone try to Cancel a Raging Goblin?

canterlotguardian - the control player is at 1 life with an empty board and their only answer in hand is a Cancel? Anyways, the example illustrates the rules question dantekratos asked so what's the problem?

There isn't one. My mind works in mysterious ways, and your example completely befuddled me for a moment.

to be fair, it was the first card that came to mind. I wasn't trying to illustrate real life here.

@JWiley129: I'd like to point out that changing the target of a counterspell to Ricochet Trap does counter that spell. Ricochet Trap is still on the stack while it is resolving, but it will have left the stack by the time the target spell begins resolving. If the target spell has no remaining legal targets, it will be countered by the game rules when it would normally resolve.

Epochalyptik - You are correct that it's the game rules that counter the counterspell, but Ricochet Trap itself doesn't say "counter target spell." It's really down to semantics on how Ricochet Trap counters the spell.

It may be down to technicalities on how, but the end result is that it does. That's what matters here.

Ricochet Trap does not counter a spell, it merely redirects it. What you can do is say you cast Raging Goblin and your opponent cast Cancel targeting the goblin. You can cast Ricochet Trap (for mind you :) ) targeting Cancel. Then you change the target of Cancel to Ricochet Trap, which allows your Raging Goblin to resolve.
