Can -1/-1 counters and +1/+1 counters coexist?

Asked by SandyDufresne 10 years ago

My opponent attacks with Phyrexian Crusader and I block with a Kazandu Blademaster with 2 +1/+1 counters on it. Does the Kazandu Blademaster now have 2 +1/+1 counters and 2 -1/-1 counters? Or, do the counters counter each other causing Kazandu Blademaster to have no counters?

Well, obviously I can't block with that creature. Change it to a Umara Raptor with 2 +1/+1 counters.

They do indeed cancel each other out

They, in effect, cancel each other out. I now present my favorite rule:

121.2. If a permanent has both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it, N +1/+1 and N -1/-1 counters are removed from it as a state-based action, where N is the smaller of the number of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on it.

Sorry to be a downer here, however, you would not have been able to block the Phyrexian Crusader with your Kazandu Blademaster as the Crusader clearly states that it has protection from red and white and the Blademaster is a white creature...

But yea, the +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters cancel each other out...

yeah, obviously I realized that based on the first answer to the question. Try reading all the answers that have been posted before you answer.
