Butcher's Glee and lifelink

Asked by Argy 8 years ago

An Opponent told me the other day that if I regenerated a creature with Butcher's Glee I don't get Lifelink from it.

I think this is how it goes (Creatures are made up).

He attacks with 3/3 Bulbous Mess.I block with 2/2 Bear. Before damage goes through I play Butcher's Glee targeting my Bear.Damage is assigned and I gain 3 life.Instead of going to the graveyard the bear is tapped and removed from combat, which means that it no longer has any damage marked on it and survives.

You're almost correct. You must cast Butcher's Glee before the damage is dealt, otherwise it'd be too late.

Regenerate is a replacement effect that says if the creature would be destroyed, instead, tap it, remove it from combat if applicable, and remove all damage marked on it. Your creature would survive.

It will still deal damage to the opponent's 3/3. And you would gain 5 life. Your creature would be a 5/2, dealing all of its 5 damage to your opponent's creature.

Sorry I misread, you're pretty much right on with the time to cast the spell.
