Butcher of the Horde sacrificing facedown Ashcloud Phoenix

Asked by VampireArmy 9 years ago

So say both are on the field and Ashcloud Phoenix is face down. Will it return if I sacrifice it with Butcher of the Horde ?

I want to say yes but i'm actually a little unsure. If yes, that would mean you could potentially keep sacrificing it so gain all abilities at any time, right?

A face-down Ashcloud Phoenix will not return to the battlefield because it didn't die - what died was a 2/2 colorless creature that is revealed as part of the game rules when being put to the graveyard.

So no, it will not return when sacrificed either.

For completeness' sake: If you have the mana to flip the phoenix after every time in enters, your "combo" will work (while of course being a whole lot less attractive).

No, it won't. Remember that when a creature with Morph is face down, it is a colorless 2/2 creature, and nothing else. No name, no type, no abilities. Ashcloud Phoenix won't return to the battlefield unless it has that triggered ability, and in order to have that ability it must be face-up.

That about answers it then. I was lead to believe that the morphed creature still had it's name but was not revealed. Oh well. No big deal

Whether or not the card had a name doesn't matter, because it didn't have any of the other abilities while it was face down.

"Dies" triggers are a special type of "leaves the battlefield" triggers, and they use information from the moment right before the object left the battlefield to determine if and how they trigger. The face-down creature didn't have any abilities at the moment before it left the battlefield.
