Bouncing Yisan

Asked by MSU_Iced_Z 9 years ago

What happens to the ability if Yisan, the Wanderer Bard is somehow removed from the battlefield with the activated ability on the stack? It checks the "number of verse counters on Yisan," so I'm not sure what the result is. Does the ability get countered because there is no Yisan? Do they get to search for an Ornithopter since there are no counters? (Gatherer has no rulings, I checked. lol)

Thanks!

The ability definitely won't be countered. Once on the stack, an ability exists independently of its source. Removing the source will not counter the ability.

If Yisan, the Wanderer Bard isn't on the battlefield when the ability resolves, then the game uses Yisan's last known information to determine how many verse counters it had on it at the time it left the battlefield.

608.2g. If an effect requires information from the game (such as the number of creatures on the battlefield), the answer is determined only once, when the effect is applied. If the effect requires information from a specific object, including the source of the ability itself or a target that's become illegal, the effect uses the current information of that object if it's in the zone it was expected to be in; otherwise, the effect uses the object's last known information. See rule 112.7a.

Okay, that makes sense, thanks. I knew it wouldn't be countered due to the missing source, I was was thinking it could be because it would looking at something that isn't there any longer (both of which happen to be Yisan, granted).

Could I use something like Vampire Hexmage after it's been activated but before it resolves in order to lessen the effect? Not that there's an effect like that in standard now, but who knows what kinds of craziness those khans could be up to.

Yes. If Yisan, the Wanderer Bard is still on the battlefield, the ability will count the number of verse counters on it as the ability resolves. If it isn't, it will use the LKI to determine the number of verse counters that used to be on Yisan, the Wanderer Bard .
