Bouncing Purphoro after trigger

Asked by leoallil 8 years ago

Purphoros, God of the Forge is on the battlefield.

I cast Krenko's Command and it resolves, triggering Purphoros abillity two times.

My oponent casts Boomerang tragetting Purphoro and it resolves.

According to him the damage wont happen. He says the ability will check if Purphoro is on the battlefield as it resolves because it says "Purphoro deals damage". And Purphoro is not on the battlefield anymore so it can't deal damage,

I think the damage will happen because the ability is independent of its source and will resolve anyway.

Thanks

You're correct. Any ability, triggered or activated, exists on the stack independently from its source. Even if its source leave the battlefield or appropriate zone for any reason, the ability will still resolve.

It doesn't work the way your opponent thinks. Like you said, once a triggered ability has triggered it's a completely independent object from the original source. The fact that the ability says "Purphoros deals damage..." just means it will use the last-known information about Purphoros' characteristics if for some reason he isn't on the battlefield as it resolves and the game needs to know something about him.

What your opponent should have done was responded to your Krenko's Command after you cast it. Then Purphoros, God of the Forge wouldn't have been around to trigger when the tokens were created.
