Boonweaver Giant being killed

Asked by zigkid3 6 years ago

If I play Boonweaver Giant and his ETB effect goes on the stack and in response someone kills him, the ETB effect would resolve next.

Even though Boonweaver Giant is no longer on the field, the effect still happens though correct? Obviously if I search for just any typical aura the effect would just fizzle because it has to enchant boonweaver.

However, can I then choose to something like Animate Dead?

I do see on the wizards website it states "If Boonweaver Giant isnt on the battlefield when its ability resolves, you cant put any Aura onto the battlefield. You may still search the appropriate zones and shuffle your library, if applicable." But I am not sure if that takes reanimates auras into account or not so long as you have it target boonweaver.

Bonus question: would this also work for Necromancy? It's considered an "enchantment" but as soon as it attaches to a creature it becomes an aura.

No to both. If the ability resolves wthout Giant being around anymore no aura will work:

All auras, including Animate Dead that enchants a card in the yard, actually work from the battlefield.

Additionally, you can never search for Animate Dead with Giant, becuase it cannot be legally enchanted with it. From the Wizards website:

"The Aura card must be able to legally enchant Boonweaver Giant. For example, you can't put an Aura with enchant land onto the battlefield this way."

Necromancy does not have the aura subtype, so you cannot search for it with Giant.

The important thing is that the ability is looking at the creature boonweaver giant that is no longer there. The creature card boonweaver giant in the graveyard is a completely different object with no relation to the creature (yes, its the same card, but the ability doesn't recognize it).
