board wipe and flashing creatures in

Asked by Khanye 9 years ago

i could be wrong on this, but i remember the oracle text on past sweepers used to read "destroy all x in play"

so you could flash a creature in and have it survive the wipe, as it was not there when the wipe checked the board.

is this correct or wrong?

the question at hand is my opponent casts End Hostilities , i activate Yisan, the Wanderer Bard and put it on the stack to let End Hostilities resolve and bring my creature in.

does this work, or does my creature die as well?

No, you're screwed.

Spells and abilities have their effect when they resolve. They resolve after being put on the stack. Anything that's on the battlefield when End Hostilities resolves will be destroyed; the fact that it was put on the battlefield in between when it was put on the stack and when it resolves is irrelevant.

Sorry, my last sentence there was pretty vague. It should read:

"The fact that a creature was put on the battlefield in between when End Hostilities was put on the stack and when End Hostilities resolves is irrelevant."

The thing you are remembering is that "destroy" effects, like damage, used to go onto the stack. So you could cast Wrath of God and when it resolved, it would put a destruction effect onto every creature in play. Then, while those were still on the stack, you could have used Yisan Chord to put a new creature into play which would have survived the spell.

That is no longer how it works, and the effect of the spell simple -happens- when it resolves, namely, that all creatures are destroyed which are on the battlefield at that time.

It's wanderer not wandering? I really don't like how that scans.

@Devonin: Mass destruction effects never worked that way. There was a time when they sort of did, but the "stack" didn't exist and the timing rules only allowed for playing interrupts, damage prevention effects, and regeneration effects.

Right, I'm trying to use current terms to describe a situation that current rules (and people who only played with current rules) wouldn't otherwise get. Taking a bit of creative license.
