Athreos, Shroud-Veiled +Academy Rector

Asked by BlackSharinganX1 3 years ago

Its my opponent turn and his Academy Rector has a coin counter on it by my Athreos, Shroud-Veiled. He decides to go to combat with the Academy Rector and i Block it with a creature to kill it.

So when it falls into the graveyeard how would the triggers go? Would i take the academy rector before it resolves?

Because it's your opponent's turn, his triggers will go on the stack first, then yours. The stack functions on first in, last out order, so your trigger will resolve first, returning Academy Rector to the field, and when it's ability tries to resolve, it will fail to find the card in the graveyard, preventing the exile and search.

If instead you attacked and they blocked with the Academy Rector, the triggers would be reversed. Assuming your opponent exiles and searches, when Athreos, Shroud-Veiled's ability goes to resolve, it will fail to find the card in the graveyard and not bring it back (even though had it been exiled from the battlefield, it would have been able to find it there).
