Athreos, God of Passage, a rule clarification:
Asked by Smokemansam 9 years ago
So I was playing a game with a friend the other day, and I had Athreos on the field, and Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts . I drew my other Teysa, and attempted to play it. Now since only one legendary can be on your side at any time, would destroying one of the Teysa trigger Athreos' second ability?
@Devonin: That is incorrect. "Dies" means "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield." Although the second copy is not destroyed, it does die.
Athreos would trigger.
700.4. The term dies means "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield."

Wouldn't that result in an infinte loop of the two Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts be swapped back and forth the graveyard (due to the legendary rule) until your opponent decided to break the cycle by paying 3 life?

Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts has protection creatures so im not shure this will even work at all

Protection only stops Damage, Enchanting/Equipping, Blocking and Targeting, and Athreos does none of those things to Teysa. Her protection from creatures has no impact on this function.

In commander rule you can have as many legendary out in play as you want but can only have one of each in your deck

@swilliams6683: Not only was this thread last posted in back in January, but your comment is also slightly misleading. If you ever have two legendary permanents with the same name on the battlefield under your control, you put all but one of them into your graveyard.

Thats what i was saying not in those exact words

No, the legendary rule causes one copy of the legendary permanent to be put into the graveyard as a state-based effect. It does not die, so Athreos won't trigger.
