Ashcloud Phoenix and Butcher of the Horde Synergy

Asked by SixthSamurai 9 years ago

Situation:

Butcher of the Horde is in play

Ashcloud Phoenix is cast as a morph creature and successfully ETB

Butcher of the Horde sacrifices Ashcloud Phoenix before combat for haste

Ashcloud Phoenix second effect triggers and it re-enters as a morph

Butcher of the Horde sacrifices it again for vigilance, repeats cycle for lifelink

I am not sure of morph rulings so I wanted some clarity on this.

Thanks!

No. While you would have to reveal Ashcloud Phoenix each time it dies, unless you have the mana to turn it face up each time, it won't have any abilities, including its "On death, return face down" trigger. At best, you're sacrificing it twice.

Ashcloud Phoenix 's second ability only triggers when it dies if it's face up, otherwise it doesn't have the ability. You would have to flip it face up before sacing it to Butcher if you wanted it to come back.

Would it still be worth running a one-of ?

Depends on your deck, build and plan. But for its use as a sacrifice engine for Butcher of the Horde , paying 6 mana to give one ability to the Butcher seems unideal.
