are snakes also considered serpent subtype?

my opponent had a Coiling Oracle on the battlefield then cast Whelming Wave. They argued that a snake is a serpent so the Coiling Oracle wouldn't return to their hand. that doesn't seem right to me.

You're correct. A creature is only a serpent if it specifically has the serpent creature type. For example, Bog Serpent is a serpent.

Magic is a very literal game. If an effect specifies a quality for some reason, it is concerned with objects with exactly that quality. And cards are only what they say they are.
