Are Mindswipe copies staggered?

Asked by Loreshadow 8 years ago

If Pyromancer's Goggles is used to cast Mindswipe. Do I immediately need to target the same target twice, or can I target a responding counterspell with my copy? Is the copy slow to target when it comes to instant interruptions? Enough to counter both spells?

A counterspell is done before the first swipe resolves but after it is copied correct? In this case is the counterspell also interrupting the targeting of the copy?

When you tap Pyromancer's Goggles it sets up a delayed trigger ability. If you use the mana to cast a red instant or sorcery then it triggers and goes on the stack to copy that spell. Your opponents can respond at various times throughout this process. If they cast a Counterspell in response to the trigger than the counterspell will resolve before the copy trigger and will no longer be on the stack to be targeted by the copy. If they cast the Counterspell after the trigger resolves then when you put your copy of Mindswipe on the stack the counter will not be there to target.

Either way a spell cast in response is not going to be able to be countered by the copy without another outside card.

Can Mirrorpool copy the original spell to then target the opponent's counterspell?

At which point, will the first copy of Mindswipe be able to target any further counterspells? Or will it only ever be able to then target the same original target spell as original as a backup replacement in case that too is countered?

Or will a Pyromancer's Goggles copy of Mindswipe never be useable versus someone who understands the stack?

In which scenario will I be able to use multiple Mindswipes through copies?

Yes, a Mirrorpool can add yet another copy of Mindswipe to the stack and point it at the Counterspell.

The Goggles copy of Mindswipe will only be able to target spells that are currently on the stack at the time the Goggles trigger creates it. An opponent doesn't have to understand anything in particular to properly use their Counterspell in this situation. If they respond before the Goggles trigger creates the copy, then the Counterspell will have resolved before the copy gets created. If they wait for the copy to get created and then respond, then you're already past the point where you could have chosen a new target for it.
