Ardenn's attach ability on creature with protection

Can Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist's attach ability target a creature (Sword of Fire and Ice equipped giving pro red) with a red equipment like The Reaver Cleaver?
I am thinking that since the ability is from a white source (Ardenn), this is a legal target and the equipment would be successfully attached am I correct?

One small clarification: If the creature isn't already holding the Sword and the Sword and Cleaver get attached by Ardenn's ability at the same time, then the Cleaver will briefly attach and then fall off as described above. If the creature does already have the Sword then the Cleaver won't be attached at all because protection from red makes that an illegal action.

Part of the protection ability is that it cannot be equipped by a permanent with that quality, in this case being a red card. While the attaching process is coming from a white source, The Reaver Cleaver would immediately become unattached, because it is now a red permanent equipped to a creature with protection from red. The protection stops the creature from holding it in addition to picking it up--as long as the Equipment is attached to a creature, it is considered to be equipped.
