Archangel of Thune Rulings?

Asked by alex277 4 years ago

I had a question about how Archangel of Thune works exactly. If I attacked with 3 creatures with lifelink, would I gain life 3 separate times and thus all my creatures get 3 +1/+1 counters, or would all the life from those 3 creatures be gained at the same time, only giving my creatures a single +1/+1 counter? Thanks for any help clarifying! :)

Each creature is it's own life gain trigger so you gain 3 +1/+1 counters.

The damage happens simultaneously, but her ability triggers for each instance of lifelink, so 3 +1/1 counters.

In the future, if you have questions about rules, cards, or card interactions, please use the Rules Q&A section of this site. It has some added functionality, including the ability to “Mark as Answer” a post to indicate your question has been resolved.

I have gone ahead and moved it for you.

Just for reference, here is the relevant rule:

702.15e If multiple sources with lifelink deal damage at the same time, they cause separate life gain events (see rules 119.9–10).

Example: A player controls Ajani’s Pridemate, which reads “Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on Ajani’s Pridemate,” and two creatures with lifelink. The creatures with lifelink deal combat damage simultaneously. Ajani’s Pridemate’s ability triggers twice.

Pervavita Goretast Caerwyn Thanks for the answers! Also thanks for the info about that forum, I'm new to this site and must've missed that forum. I do have another question I just thought of, with Seraph Sanctuary on the field when you play Archangel of Thune would it get the +1/+1 counter because you gained the life from it entering with sanctuary? I'm assuming yes, but I want to clarify!

You would get the +1/+1 for Archangel of Thune entering the battlefield. Here's how the stack works:

Archangel of Thune enters the battlefield, which triggers Seraph Sanctuary. Seraph Sanctuary's ability resolves and you gain 1 life. Because Archangel of Thune is already on the battlefield, its ability will trigger and resolve, giving it a +1/+1 counter.

Yes, once you successfully cast Archangel of Thune then it is considered to be in play and would trigger from you gaining life from Seraph Sanctuary. If Seraph said whenever you cast an angel then Anchangel would not be in play yet to see the lifegain.
