Annihilator and Omnath, Locus of rage?

Asked by NonetheWeisser 4 years ago

I was dueling a friend and I had summoned Emrakul Aeons Torn with haste and swung for game. He had no way to block this damage. Obviously. Emrakul's annihilator effect triggers and my opponent would have to sacrifice 6 permanents. At this point in the game he had Omnath and 4-5 tokens on the field. He chose to sacrifice Omnath and those tokens in the hopes of dealing lethal burn damage to me and winning the game or tying it.

So would he win? Would it be a tie? Or would I win based off of timing?

If your opponent is able to do lethal damage sacrificing his elementals to deal you damage to annihilator, he will win.

Annihilator is a triggered ability that triggers when the creature with annihilator attacks.

702.85a Annihilator is a triggered ability. “Annihilator N” means “Whenever this creature attacks, defending player sacrifices N permanents.”

The combat phase is split into different steps.

  • Beginning of Combat
  • Declare Attackers Step
  • Declare Blockers Step
  • Combat Damage Step
  • End of Combat

Annihilator will trigger during the declare attackers step. Due to that, your opponent will be forced to sacrifice permanents during this step. The triggers that happen from sacrificing permanents also occur during this step. So when your opponent sacrifices elementals to annihilator, the triggers from Omnath, Locus of Rage will go onto the stack during the declare attackers step.

For your Emrakul, the Aeons Torn to deal combat damage to your opponent, it needs to be the combat damage step. If you die to the triggers during the declare attackers step, you will not be able to deal your opponent the lethal damage during the combat damage step.
