Ability's in graveyard

Asked by Orphen89 9 years ago

If a creature I have on the battlefield gives ability's to other creatures does this apply to creatures in the graveyard as well?

For example, if I play Syphon Sliver which gives all slivers lifelink will the slivers in my graveyard allso have lifelink?

(I ask this because of the card Soulflayer that is coming out with Fate reforged)

If this is so then when Syphon Sliver dies will Soulflayer keep the lifelink or lose it? (since then the exiled sliver won't have the bonus anymore)

No, in fact in the graveyard Syphon Sliver doesn't even have lifelink itself.

The ability on Syphon Sliver is a static effect, which is only relevant when the card is a permanent on the battlefield. When it's in the graveyard it's just a creature card with a printed static effect. It doesn't have the printed keyword ability compared to say Child of Night, which is what Soulflayer is looking for.

When an effect names a permanent type or permanent subtype, but it doesn't say "[type] card(s)," then the effect applies only to permanents of that type. Remember that permanents exist only on the battlefield. The effect won't apply to objects in other zones.

A 'creature' is a card with the type creature that is on the battlefield, otherwise it is referred to as a 'creature card'. So the ability from Syphon Sliver wouldn't affect 'creatures' (actually creature cards technically).

GreatSword makes a good point, note that Syphon Sliver doesn't have lifelink itself, it grants lifelink as a static ability, which only applies when it's on the battlefield, otherwise, it doesn't have the ability lifelink at all.
