2x Hardened Scales an infinite combo?

Asked by Mazzuno 9 years ago

So if I have 2x Hardened Scales on my battlefield and I add a +1/+1 to any creature wouldn't they just bounce back and forth to plus one +1/+1 counters infinity?

No, but they would stack. They are both replacement effects. You put x counters on an creature say x is 1. The first effect would see 1 counter and make it 2. The second would see 2 counters and make it 3.

No. The effect on Hardened Scales is a replacement effect (which usually use the words "if" and/or "instead"). A single replacement effect can only occur once. In your above situation, the creature would end up with 3 +1/+1 counters.

From Gatherer:

Each additional Hardened Scales you control will increase the number of +1/+1 counters placed on a creature by one.

Since Hardened Scales says "instead" it's a replacement effect, not a "new" effect adding an additional counter. Replacement effects only apply to events once.

614.5 A replacement effect doesnt invoke itself repeatedly; it gets only one opportunity to affect an event or any modified events that may replace it.

Example: A player controls two permanents, each with an ability that reads If a creature you control would deal damage to a creature or player, it deals double that damage to that creature or player instead. A creature that normally deals 2 damage will deal 8 damagenot just 4, and not an infinite amount.
