Spoiler Season is among us once again my friends.

I figured while we wait for more cards we could discuss them as they are being spoiled.

My favorite so far is the new Nissa. She seems pretty exciting.

What are your favorite cards so far? What do you think about the dual sided cards that allow you to choose which side you play?

I'm hoping for some sweet new equipment and possibly some nice reprints.

September 1, 2020 1:58 p.m.

I really hope for the reprinted fetches

I... Just... Want... To... Have... A... Nonbasic... Manabase... Please... Make... The... Duals... Actually... Crackable...

Daveslab2022 says... #6

I read they just confirmed the fetches in Modern Horizons 2.

September 1, 2020 2:19 p.m.

Yup. In the official trailer thingie

Daveslab2022 says... #8

Omniscience_is_life what do you mean crackable?

September 1, 2020 2:19 p.m.

likely to be cracked in packs. So there's enough to have the price be attainable

Daveslab2022 says... #10

The temples are standard though, aren’t they pretty cheap?

September 1, 2020 2:22 p.m.

Yeah, but tapped lands are tough... IDK I do like my one Temple of Plenty... mayhap I'll pick up a few more

I dont like the new flip cards. Because you will only ever see one side while its in your hand. With previous flip cards you always saw the side you were casting, these buggs me...

September 1, 2020 3 p.m.

That's true smackjack. You can't just as well flip it while it's in your hand, that's giving away crucial info... and it's annoying to play it and then say "wait no it's the other side, guys"

September 1, 2020 3:07 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #14

All the backsides are lands tho right? And the front side shows what the back taps for too, so it's not like you can forget what it does

I'm looking forward to building my 4th Omnath deck!

What we REALLY need is some card draw for white...

September 1, 2020 3:29 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #17

For the sake of commander friendliness, I wish Zareth San's Rogue!Ninjutsu was an alternate casting cost instead

September 1, 2020 3:46 p.m.

Huh, those double-sided rare lands are pretty interesting. I also like the sort of D&D feeling with the "party" mechanic. It kind of brings us back to Zendikar's exploration roots. Also a big fan of the new Drana and Nissa. Nissa in particular seems like she is quite pushed. Fetchland expeditions are...cool?...I guess. Thematically it fits the plane which is fine, but realistically these do nothing for our current reprint predicament.

September 1, 2020 4:50 p.m.

Yay standard now has Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, Lotus Cobra, and duel lands!

September 1, 2020 5:38 p.m.

Daveslab2022 says... #20

To be fair, there aren’t any real good payoffs for Lotus Cobra. Maybe an early Nissa but that can happen in a variety of ways.

September 1, 2020 7:43 p.m.

Ugin? ugin is always a good payoff

I see that the popular prediction that Omnath would return with a fourth color has proven to be ture, and, at this rate, it is only a matter of time before a five-colored Omnath is printed.

That is a very interesting new way to use double-sided cards, so I applaud WotC for such an innovation.

I do not like the idea of the "party" mechanic, and I hope that it does not return after this set; what was wrong with allies? The fact that they scaled was why they were so popular.

Is Nissa turning evil, I wonder? I know that black is not automatically evil in this game, but her face does not look like one that most people expect a hero to have.

The masterpiece lands are very nice, and this must be the further reprint of the fetchlands to which WotC was referring. I know that these reprints shall not significantly lower their prices, but any reprint is better than none at all, and all ten pain fetchlands are being reprinted, which is very awesome.

DemonDragonJ

They actually announced that enemy fetch lands are going to be in modern horizons 2.

September 1, 2020 9:40 p.m.

King_marchesa says... #24

What happens when you resolve omnath's landfall ability more than four times?

September 1, 2020 9:51 p.m.

King_marchesa says... #25

That's not thaaaat good then, because if there's one thing I like doing its casting a Scapeshift for 20.

September 1, 2020 9:54 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #26

Daveslab2022, yes, but that set will not be released until next year, and WotC explicitly said that the fetchlands would be reprinted another time after the Secret Lair during this year.

September 1, 2020 10:41 p.m.

DemonDragonJ - I think there are a few reasons why they switched from Allies to the Party mechanic. 1) The war with the eldrazi is over so there is no longer a need for an alliance among the denizens of Zendikar, 2) WoTC is releasing some sort of D&D-MTG crossover set next year so my guess is they are laying groundwork for that set, and 3) the set was supposed to return to Zendikar's original exploration roots, so having a party of adventurers fits thematically (in my opinion).

Has anyone seen the new Ashaya (or I guess the only non-token version of Ashaya)? Holy crap! She is going into each and every one of my green EDH decks. Now I can just laugh when someone tries to wipe my board with a blue spell. Let's take a moment to consider what she stops: River's Rebuke, Flood of Tears, Devastation Tide, Crush of Tentacles, mother-freaking-Cyclonic Rift, and most blue single target bounce spells.

September 2, 2020 11:18 a.m.

Oops I forgot to include Coastal Breach, but still if I only have to worry about Evacuation, Curse of the Swine, and Wash Out (there are more, but these three I see the most) then I am a-O.K with that.

September 2, 2020 11:22 a.m.

golgarigirl says... #29

OMG Ashaya. This thing does all the things. As someone who plays a landfall deck:

1.) My creatures trigger landfall. 2.) More ramp! 3.) My creatures can't be Rift'd.

Also all these spell lands are sweet. I know they come in tapped, but them being what you need when you need...even something simple like Bala Ged Recovery...I am so excited.

September 2, 2020 12:54 p.m.

Oof that card is busted. I'm glad R&D is answering Cyc Rift, but did they have to make the effect so... good?

September 2, 2020 1:46 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #31

In EDH, I don't feel that Taborax being cheaper makes up for being much more specific than Erebos, Bleak-Hearted. Still, Orah, Skyclave Hierophant is picking up steam

September 2, 2020 4:13 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #32

That new vampire, nighthawk scavenger, is almost entirely better than Vampire Nighthawk in the same way that Swiftblade Vindicator is almost entirely better than is Boros Swiftblade, an even uses the same naming convention. The original nighthawk was a great card that some players felt was too powerful, but this card is even more so, and I feel that it is a blatant example of power creep.

September 2, 2020 4:55 p.m.

Can someone explain the land/spell flip cards to me? I know with the lands you just play one or the others but idk about these.

September 2, 2020 6:54 p.m.

Daveslab2022 says... #34

I_Want_To_PlayAllTheDecks

I’m pretty sure you get to choose. Either cast spell or play as a land.

September 2, 2020 7:29 p.m.

golgarigirl says... #35

Ok, looking at commons for a sec...

Cleansing Wildfire and Feed the Swarm.

Unconditional 2-mana land destruction cantrip and monoblack enchantment destruction. Not sacrifice...destruction (that can also unconditionally hit a creature). Also 2 mana.

These are amazing. I am excited to play these in pauper and commander respectively.

September 3, 2020 7:18 a.m.

King_marchesa says... #36

Emeria's call is pretty trash if they made it have a kicker to create angels it would be better. Also angel of destiny looks like a really fun card but also it can be pretty broken in some decks. The mono black enchantment removal seem really cool I'm really excited to try it!

September 3, 2020 7:23 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #37

Strictly better Geomancer's Gambit gooo

Kinda surprised 's targeted enchantment removal ended up being as straightforward as a Devour in Shadow

Felidar Sovereign got a spiritual successor

Relic Robber is really cute yet not really fitting in my Marisi, Breaker of the Coil deck

Angel of Jubilation that's castable outside of mono-? kinda wowed, although I wish it traded some stats for evasion

September 3, 2020 12:27 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #38

Yasharn has the same ability as Angel of Jubilation, but trades flying and an anthem effect for mana acceleration; I wonder which is the better choice for decks that can support both creatures?

Angel of destiny is a very awesome way to win the game, but its controller shall need to find a way to reduce an opponent’s life total through other means, to ensure that the life from the angel does not help their opponents to win the game.

Zagras is quite awesome, but also expensive, and I do not wish to alter any of my decks to accommodate him.

Feed the swarm is the card to which Mark Rosewater was referring, a black card that can destroy enchantments. I do appreciate that it is a sorcery and causes life loss, because being unable to affect enchantments was a deliberate weakness for that color, so this card should not be efficient. Again, I hope that this does not start a trend of black being able to destroy enchantments, and I shall mention that in survey for this set.

Inscription of abundance is nice, but I currently have no need for it in any of my decks, although I do hope that it is part of a cycle and not an individual card.

Valakut exploration is an interesting new use of an old ability, and I do hope that that type of effect becomes more common in the future.

Angelheart protector would have been awesome if it had flash, but, without that mechanic, it is merely mediocre.

Archon of Emeria will make many players miserable, so I am certain that it shall draw the ire of every other player in multiplayer games; I really wish that it has cost 4 mana, because 3 mana is too low of a cost for a card that is that powerful.

I do like Seagate stormcaller, because it shows that WotC is still having spell copying be shared by both red and blue, instead of having ot be only in red. It really should have had flash, because it is too predictable, without it. Its kicker cost is also far too high to ever be worth paying, in my mind.

Also, on that subject, this is now the second time that kicker has returned since the original Zendikar block (the previous time being in Dominaria), yet there is no indication that multikciker shall return, which is unfortunate, because that is a very awesome mechanic.

Also, in this article, Mark Rosewater said that wizards (the creature type) do not appear in black, when this game has a long history of wizards in black; how could he not have remembered that?

Coward_Token says... #39

I think he just meant for the set's distribution of Party tribal

(and beyond that, I bet Warlock will replace Wizard for flavoring mono- arcane casters)

September 3, 2020 12:40 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #40

Coward_Token, that makes sense, but I still fail to see it was even necessary to introduce the warlock type, since I feel that wizards were perfectly fine as they were, before.

September 3, 2020 12:48 p.m.

Woo! A nearly functional reprint of Harrow. Slightly worse since the basics enter tapped, but I'll gladly take it. My Mina and Denn, Wildborn deck is getting so many great new toys.

Valakut Exploration also looks like some great card advantage.

Also, I am a bit bummed that Confound Conundrum only hits opponents. I'd sure love to use that for my own advantage. It is still a cool card though.

September 4, 2020 1:26 a.m.

Oooo! A legendary Avenger of Zendikar

I only just now realized that Nimana Skitter-Sneak is a Rogue riding an insect rather than turning into one Animorph-cover-style

September 4, 2020 5:41 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #45

Roil eruption is too expense to ever be practical; at the very least, it could have been an instant.

Inscription of ruin is another very interesting card, but, as with the green inscription, the kicker cost is too high for it to ever be feasible in most decks.

I am very glad that cragplate baloth costs 7 mana, since I feel that some recent creatures have been far too powerful for their mana costs.

September 4, 2020 6 p.m.

I love the new card Sea Gate Restoration  Flip I have nowhere to play it but the flavor is so on point and i love the sea gate storyline.
