Halo Fountain: Heh, by proxy? Anyway, two mana to draw one card per turn isn't super efficient, but beggars can't be choosers, and the versatility of being able to make a token or even win the game makes it a pretty good package. If you can get trough the color weight of the activated abilities, I can see this being interesting in boros with red's cheap "temporary tokens", e.g. Elemental Mastery

Urabrask: Prosper is trying hard not to laugh. 5 mana is a bit steep too

Ob: Finally rakdos eh? Though self-copying seems a bit weird. Without the Demon tribal part, it could have easily been a Tibalt card.

Cut of the Profits: Yeah this art is pretty sick. I have a soft spot for black cards flavored around gold

Vivien: Feels like kind of a black card with all the stuff that's going into your graveyard but okay

Rumor Gatherer: So why isn't this a Druid? Is the flavor that she's shrunk the big pets?? So weird

An Offer You Can't Refuse: New EDH staple. Two treasures is worth it to stop that key hose/bomb.

Incriminiate: Make Cannibalize Standard-legal you cowards!

Courier's Briefcase: Hm, wonder if there'll be a cycle of rainbow mana cards? Although I can see the reasoning of mono-green being able to produce other colors on its own. Get four of these and you can use the Treasure mana from three of them to generate 60% of the colors needed to draw three from the remaining one, yay...

Kitt Kanto: How is a "Mayhem Diva" at all white? Anyway, IDK if I can make room for this in my Marisi deck, pretty expensive and kind of in tension since untapped creatures could have probably just attacked instead

Anhelo: He's clever enough to not have enough power to be casualty-fuel himself

Kamiz: Yeah I have a hard time getting a sense of direction for this. Voltron with a bit more medium-big creatures?

Perrie: Permanents, not creatures. Dig trough your collection for weirdos like Coral Reef and Serrated Arrows

Ziatora: Sorry, Gleeock

I did some digging.

Pretty sure "The Beamtown Bullies" will be the flavor I'm looking for. to slap your nonlegendary hasted & goaded for an opponent can be really fun.

"Phabine, Boss's Confidant" is just different enough for to be interesting. I don't like 6CMC commanders though. Cool to see a parley card... but 6CMC parley, when some metas are so fast with non-combat focus.

"Parnesse, the Subtle Brush" IMO is sweet. I don't personally play & spell copying gets to be a bit hoop-jumping for my taste, also I would be interested to see a deck that includes spell copy focus while avoiding the temptation to just make it a combo deck.

"Kros, Defense Contractor" is fun for Goading + trample can be good.

"Tivit, Seller of Secrets" people are pretty high on this guy for . 6CMC is steep again. Council's dilemma repeated seems to bog the game down to me... Maybe not?

Well now that all the mob bosses are out, I'm going to rank them in the order that I like them. Because why not though? Remember, these are just my preferences and opinions. Feel free to make any notes I didn't think of.

1-Falco Spara: This card sort of reminds me of Tayam, Luminous Enigma, but with top of your library, and you don't have to remove as many counters. Sure, you have to pay the cost, but it's like always having an additional card in your hand. Only four mana for that? Love it. Oh, and I'm also a big fan of the shield counters.

2-Raffine, Scheming Seer: Only 3 mana, and if you go wide with tokens, you draw like, 10 cards and choose the best out of those. If you go with graveyard synergy, it's easy to either get those cards back or give Mortivore a bunch of power. That, and one of those tokens is gonna get a BUNCH of counters. It's wide and tall all in one.

3-Ziatora, The Incinerator: I do love me some treasure, and three every end step is pretty good. This is nothing special in Jund, however, since we have Korvold, Fae-Cursed King. I do like the idea of having a way better Makeshift Munitions in the command zone, and the treasure makes that even better. If only Korvold wasn't so popular.

4-Jetmir, Nexus of Revels: Cheap, and REALLY good in a tokens deck. 9 creatures is easy with cards like Doubling Season in Jetmir's identity, and giving them all trample, double-strike, and +3+0 is pretty good. Even if they're all just 1/1s, Jetmir gives you a total of 9 4/1 double strike tramples. That's 8 damage per creature with the double-strike, but the trample seems kinda redundant. If your double-strikers don't kill your opponent's creatures in first-strike combat phase, they're likely going to die in combat. But that's just assuming they're 1/1s, so he's actually going to be a lot better than this. Still, he's not the best of the bunch.

5-Lord Xander, the Collector- I like what he does, sure, but his mana cost erases any chance of me using him. There is no way I'm paying 7 for my commander, ever. But that's just my opinion.

Ashdust says... #5

So what are the face commanders for the decks?

April 8, 2022 11:33 a.m.

Sigh....I've been trying to kick my enjoyment of stealing opponents cards in EDH, but Evelyn the Covetous makes me want to rebuild that deck. I've been waiting for a grixis commander who does that for such a long time now. Thanks WotC I hate it.

Urabrask is sneaky strong. I was disappointed at first, and it took me a couple re-reads to understand the power of the card. For a floor, you at least negate your opponents draw step every turn. The fact that you force them to play the card they exile that turn means that they can't hang onto cards in their hand. I would've loved to see Urabrask trigger on every card drawn by opponents, but this is a really interesting take on resource denial. That alternate art is amazing as well.

Ob Nixilis seems pretty awesome and easily breakable. He will definitely be a fun build around.

Birthing Pod on a planeswalker is pretty strong. Add on some card advantage and a solid token beater, Vivian seems good.

All of the commander deck legends seem interesting. Most of them have some interesting take on the shard color combos. Nothing that really interests me, but I appreciate that WotC designed them to not completely follow traditional shard roles. The fact that they brought "parley" back is awesome!

On the other hand, the crime bosses are a resounding "meh" for me.

I am enjoying the mechanics and some of the card design choices in the set. "Casualty", "blitz", and shield counters all seem interesting and can lead to fun play patterns.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor I just realized Urabrask overwrites the 1st draw... I like him more because I misread that originally.

I like Elspeth more than some other people. Pretty easy ult mark to hit, I like the permanent topdeck option as well.

Ashdust I agree on all things with Jund face commander. Removal (with the right build) + ramp on the commander is really solid... But then it is also this really uninspired Korvoldy-dragony-sacy Jund theme... Nothing New there. The Ogre/devil guys on the other hand...

Story comments:

Surprised over the lack of Compleation here, was expecting Ob to get ambushed after he planeswalked. Hell, while it probably would have been too much of a shaggy dog story for most people, I kind of hoped Elspeth would be the one to fall victim to continue her string of traumatic defeats, being brainwashed into finding Phyrexia the home she was looking for.

Elspeth making a point of needing to find a purpose for yourself from within seems more green than anything to me, but I guess that's Ajani's influence.

Ob was written as a bit too much of a card carrying villain compared to his origin story. Guess he was high on halo?

Kamiz apparently turning traitor felt like an ass pull seeing as her own POV story made her out to be personally loyal to her mob boss

Obscura seem to pretty much be a less extreme Dimir. Don't see much white in them flavorfully. Then again, I don't see much white in Orzhov beyond the churchy aesthetics, so take that with a grain of salt.

Cabaretti seems pretty mono-red to me. They want to profit off of selling a good time, don't really see where the druid-ness comes in.

Xander's conversation with Elspeth about the pre-Adversary status quo makes the plane out to be philosophically mono-green without nature. You got a number of tribes, which are internally hierarchical and nurturing, that form a harmonious ecosystem with each other, even if that harmony necessitates violent competition between the tribes on the individual level.

Back to card comments

Shield counters are neat, could maybe see them on black too since they're pretty similar to regenerate

Like that Maestros is leaning into spell sling with saccing rather than Grixis' (the Alara shard) reanimation

Mestros Diabolist: how is this not a Warlock?

Evelyn: Don't have to cast collected cards on just your own turn, so e.g. Leyline of Anticipation can provide quite a lot of value here. Can't think of a lot of ways to make a lot of vamps in grixis tho.

Maestros Initiate: neat common design, 3 power makes it fine casualty fodder

Professional Face-Breaker: treasure-on-damage has always felt like a strongly red mechanic to me (shaking my fist at Malcolm and Grim Hireling), so I'm glad the color if finally getting the more go-wide-friendly version of this effect. Built-in evasion AND impulsive draw makes this solid.

Kros: sketching out a deck, lets see how it goes: Kros, Defense Contractor. A bit sad that Curse of Predation doesn't work as well as it could since the goad will run out before the enemy creature has a chance to attack again.

Phabine: dunno why it's so conservatively costed, especially when parley has the downside of giving people cards

Shield Counters first showed up on Palliation Accord. Too bad it probably won't get reprinted here.

Halo Fountain should find a niche in Selesnya convoke and mono-White decks. Disappointed that isn't multi-colored.

Ob Nixilis, the Adversary is a nice Demon Tribal card, but that Casualty ability will make it monetarily expensive.

Speaking of Casualty, do you think it could make mono-blue Aristocrat a thing in standard?

April 9, 2022 2:57 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #11

hahaha yeah you're right about PA having shield counters, meaning SNC mostly straight up buffed it since it will now be quite resistant e.g. Disenchant. Hell, you can animate it and sac it to transfer a probably considerable amount of shield counters to The Ozolith and beyond

Whoops, spoke to soon on PA: https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/681066551331389440/will-shield-counters-moved-from-palliation-accord

Rob the Archives feels like a needless step-down from Reckless Impulse's templating

Ballroom Fighters: I believe this is the third couple dancing-based card since Markov Waltzer and Alluring Suitor  Flip

Mage's Attendant: STANDARD LEGAL MONO-WHITE COUNTERSPELL ALERT! Finally. I believe the last one was Frontline Medic, over 9 years ago. I think it's fair for white to do its counterspells trough non-flash permanents à la Seal of Cleansing rather than Instants, requring non-hidden setup. Looking forward for more in the future. However, the flavor of calling the card an "Attendant" is a little weird seeing as the "Master" is the one which sacrifices its life.

Luxior: Hah, I was thinking how funny it was that the story made out Elspeth to be this great fighter who's handed fancy weapons, yet her actual Planewalker cards don't really reflect that. Anyway, e.g. Huatli, Radiant Champion is quite interesting here; make note of PWs that can make lots of loyalty for themselves and/or buff creatures. Also, it's not to be overlooked for actual creature cards either; the curve is quite perfect for Skullbriar, the Walking Grave

Black Market Tycoon: Would it have been overpowered without the downside? It's basically standard-legal Coalition Relic on legs. That aside, feels more appropriate for or even

Metropolitan Angel: Flavor here is confusing seeing as the angels being absent, even towards the end arguably, is a plot point.

Public Enemy: I don't get it, isn't this pretty useless for 1v1 formats? Anyway, funny with Kros, Defense Contractor (and probably intentionally so)

Queza, Augur of Agonies: Life loss doesn't work with Curiosity, sorry! Kind of wish it said "each" and "that much".

Obscura Ascendancy: Feels like quite a bit more work than the Maestro and Broker one without a lot more gain. Got any 0-cost spells?

Illuminator Virtuoso: Looting isn't extremly strong but I'm not a fan of this pattern of color bleed with reference to learn (e.g. Professor of Symbology).

Angel of Seperation

Angel of Seperation
3BB
Creature - Angel Nightmare
Flying

Whenever you take damage, prevent it and mill twice that many cards instead.

This seems hilarious for Dredge or Oath. You can also do dumb things with Eldrazi. Only issue is the 3 toughness, which puts it in range of Lightning Bolt. Definitely more of a Legacy/Vintage/EDH card.

April 12, 2022 6:22 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #18

Void rend shall definitely replace Mortify in my black/white/blue EDH deck, and I hope that I can find a way to put Queza, augur of agonies into that deck, as well. I also would like to put fleetfoot dancer in my red/white/green EDH deck, but I am not certain what card to remove for it.

I am rather displeased that Xander does not have flying, when he is a vampire demon, and both of thsoe creature types have flying more often than they do not.

Overall, I am not quite as excited for thsi set as I was for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, but it still looks nice, and I am hoping for some great reprints in the accompanying Commander set.

I think the Hideaway enchantments are likely sleepers so far, they remind me of the Courts in their own way. Rabble Rousing is high CMC, but it is quite good. I probably will buy the entire enchantment cycle right away.

Smuggler's Stash: Feels like a do-nothing card. T6, tap out to cast it, go. T7, only tap for Treasures, go. T8 cast an X spell with 15 mana, then try to hold back the tears when it gets Negated.

Glittering Stockpile: This is more like it. Even if it gets blown up when you've assembled like 5 counters, it'll have still generated some value as a Manalith. I'm not sure if it has the regular Treasure sac ability inately trough the rules.

Patch Up: Mmm yes I would actually like it if white had more efficient reanimation cards for small creatures

Ognis: Congratulations, Gleeock.

PleasantKenobi posted some Gavin-approved commander spoilers on his Twitter

Vazi is another spicy Jund card. More Treasure-based ramp means more card advantage too! Dockside deserves to be a bit more uncomfortable, even if I doubt we'll see her much in the 99 (or in CEDH). Note that e.g. Glittering Stockpile's normal mana tapping will also trigger her.

Mari: Not a huge fan of multi-tribe decks as they make it hard to take advantage of e.g. Cover of Darkness, but this is fun, even if you're kinda dependent on people having a decent amount of nontoken creatures. Curious parasitism with Etrata?

Some thoughts as I catch up:

Evolving Door's name pun aside, this could be fun. Probably not Modern-viable, and it won't get full reach in Standard unless something really funky happens in the next year and a half or whatever, but 5-color EDH might have a new toy. Alarablade -> Nephilim/C16 -> ? I do notice you still have to cast it, though.

Shield counters could have been called totem counters, to tie them in with totem armor and avoid the Palliation Accord nonsense. Maybe a little odd on the flavor, though.

The new flavor text for Murder is part of what annoys me about single-set planes. "Here's this group. Oops, it's gone now. Want to know more? Read the story."

Shadow of Mortality =? Death's Shadow

A random citizen with a shiny shovel is on equal footing with two trained soldiers. Said shovel is more effective than several types of swords. Good to know.

April 14, 2022 7:55 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #29

Why do so many cards that produce treasure tokens in this set produce them tapped? Would they be too powerful if they could be used immediately?

How is slip out the back remotely balanced? The fact that it can target creatures that an opponent controls, and, thus, ruin that player's strategy, means that it should cost far more then 1 mana, in my mind; either it should have been more expensive, or been able to target only its controller's creatures.

April 14, 2022 8:56 p.m.

Some commander focused thoughts on the main set since my last little blurb:

Rigo is a cool Tymna the Weaver/Edric, Spymaster of Trest type card that finally gives Bant a token commander.

Bootleggers' Stash will be quite a strong commander card (outside of the highest power levels). It's green, so it's probably coming down on T4, and all of your lands basically become storage lands that can be cashed in right away. I think folks doubting the card need to remember that similar things were said about the fairly similar Old Gnawbone, and that turned out to be quite strong. I think Bootleggers' Stash is a bit stronger than Old Gnawbone since it avoids more removal and doesn't require the combat step.

Shadow of Mortality wins the "best art in the set" award in my opinion. I don't fully agree with the Death's Shadow comparisons since it only ever hits for 7. Feels more like Scourge of the Skyclaves to me.

Seeing Hideaway come back is really cool and fits the set's flavor well. They all seem fairly strong in the right decks, but the red one randomly being 5-color kind of sucks for commander.

Slip out the Back is a cool take on Reality Ripple. It is more narrow, but it has the added benefit of pumping a creature.

All of the ascendancies seem flavorful, the jund one being my favorite

Professional Face-Breaker is an auto include in every mono red commander deck. Most R/X decks will want this as well.

Topiary Stomper could very well put creatures like Wood Elves and Farhaven Elf out of business in non-tribal, non-sacrifice focused decks.

Angel of Suffering is going straight into my Balthor the Defiled reanimator deck. She is very reminiscent of Vilis, Broker of Blood but provides card advantage at a different angle.

Body Launderer is probably a better piece in the Karmic Guide combo than Reveillark due to the cheaper mana cost. That being said, I'll probably just run both in my Tymna the Weaver/Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools deck.

Overall, the set has a couple intriguing individual cards, but I still don't find the set that interesting from either a game play or flavor perspective. Since a fair chunk of the precon legends have been spoiled already, I had originally planned to skip most of the set/precons and just pick up a couple individual cards. But this morning a yet-to-be-spoiled jund legend from the commander precon was leaked. I nearly spit out my tea when I saw the leak this morning. So I guess I'll be grabbing that precon, or at least that particular card if the rest of the deck isn't worth it.

Based on some of the spoilers/leaks so far, I suspect the monetary value in the precons will come from the new white cards (barring an expensive reprint...looking at you Dockside Extortionist).

April 15, 2022 11:28 a.m.

Correction, that jund legend could've already been leaked. I just only saw it this morning.

Gleeock says... #32

Maybe a bunch of people will feel the same & sleep on this set?.. I wouldn't count on it though, from the commander precon stuff I'm seeing, it will be a fun social experience with a high volume of playable new cards. For me personally, I'm seeing quite a bit more "playable in the 99" cards coming out of this set. Several enchantments will be affordable (the one that gives you some treasure & makes your treasure cascade. The sac to wheel to a creature one. All the Hideaway enchantments. The politics creatures. Mini clackbridge troll. Graveyardstapleangel. Structural assault is really good (think if you spend treasure to do just the right dmg). A bunch of kill spells that give you resources while killing. That is a whole lot of singles that should see reasonable prices due to the amount of attention on the big tickets like: smugglers stash

Slip out the Back: neat versatility, especially good for voltorn

Titan of Industry: missed opportunity to make an actual Giant tycoon with an ETB+attack trigger

Goldhound: don't sac the doggo >:(

Corrupt Court Official: hah, that's one reprint I don't think anyone was expecting by now

Giada: there's sadly not a whole lot of mono-white Angel cards that help you get more Angels, mostly Resplendent Angel, Valkyrie Harbinger, and especially noteably Herald of War

sylvannos says... #34

@DemonDragonJ: It isn't broken at all. It's an Unsummon/Vapor Snag that doesn't cost mana to replay the creature. The only thing better it does over Unsummon is it makes dodging Wrath of God a lot easier. You phase out your creature and it gets a +1/+1 counter, which is nice on a newly emptied board.

Otherwise, I'd rather have something that makes my opponent have to re-cast their creature.

I do not like that Angel of Suffering has only 3 toughness for 5 mana, meaning that it can be destroyed by a single Lightning Bolt; in my mind, it could easily have been a 4/4, or even a 5/4, for that cost, and still been balanced.

It is rather bold for WotC to print a card named "Depopulate," considering the current state of the world; I am not bothered by that, but I imagine that some people may find that to be insensitive.

sylvannos, that makes sense, when you explain it, that way.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor, why are the prices of those cards increasing?

April 16, 2022 3:16 p.m.

DemonDragonJ - They both have good synergy with one of the leaked precon jund legends. Bombshell + the new legend equipped with Thornbite Staff is a near infinite combo, and the Scepter lets one get around the built in downside of the new legend's ability. It's just another one of those "new unique legend that makes old obscure cards suddenly relevant" stories.

I haven't seen the cards and the lore match up this poorly since War of the Spark. The art is pretty good, though.

No 3 color Alternate win card. I feel cheated.

5 demons....a set where demons run crime families and only 5... and the two for my chosen color scheme too expensive manawise...why did you even bother wizards?

If you run monowhite angels or look to put your standard angel cards to work until autumn, don't sleep on Giada. Especially with MirrorBox.

Angel of Despair is gonna be good with Mortal Combat, Syr Konrad, the Grim and Wheel of Sun and Moon. Also makes Dimir self mill a thing when combined with Laboratory Maniac, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries and/or Thassa's Oracle.

Luxior doesn't specify that the planeswalker turned creature is Legendary. Does that mean I can have another planeswalker of the same name and type on the battlefield as long as Luxior is attached to the other?

Resourceful Defense: works with noncreatures, unlike The Ozolith. Feels like more of a blue card with the counters-moving but w/e. (Yes, you can move +1/+1 counters onto Resourceful Defense when a wrath happens, then use the ability to give your commander them later.)

Damning Verdict: it was surprising that there was no wrath for non-modified creatures in NEO, guess this took up that call

Kinda late and obvious but Luxior lets PW commanders like Teferi, Temporal Archmage kill people with commander damage

So... did the Riveteers get NO side story? Barely saw their leader too.

Oh, look at these new commander cards which I've definently never seen before.

Beamtwon Bullies: Surprised it isn't just an optional at-opponent-upkeep-trigger

Tivit: idk why this so expensive, or why it doesn't draw instead of investigate at that cost. IMO there's not enough voting cards to make this fun. Also, for cards like Tyrant's Choice, if everyone else votes for something else, you'll lose even with the extra vote.

Denry Klin: Meh, on its own it's very underwhelming. Yes, you can hand out indestruble counters like candy with Tyrite Sanctum. Some non-keyword counters like Oblivion Stone could be interesting

Bess: heh, weenie commander. Kinda wish it worked for 0/1s too. Has the dreaded "one or more" templating, without the redeeming "that many" addage, so you'll have to stagger token creations to make her big efficiently. Note that it's just base p/t, so you're still free to add other anthem effects

Turf War: I like the design a lot, but it's a bit expensive for the hoops you got to jump trough. Obviously the dream is to boop everyone at the same time to ramp yourself by three. Hope you got some pillow fort!

Rain of Riches: Prosper is having a bit of a field day

Mezzio Mugger: a bit too expensive to either hardcast OR Blitz imo

Smuggler's Share: each end step? And not just the opponent who's turn it is? Oh my.

Lethal Scheme: Not too bad, in a mono-black zombie deck you could cast this for free with convoke

In Too Deep: Meh, I like Aura removal for disabling commanders, this just adds another commander tax

Jailbreak: ANY kind of permanent

Aerial Extortionist: more white card advantage, quite cute, if a little expensive for how fragile it is

Grand Cresendo: Alright! Never mind the tokens, finally mono-white gets an anti-wrath Instant for two mana

Excess: I like rewards for go-wide combat, even if you can still just Dockside for similar results

Seize the Spotlight: Aggresively costed red mini-Expropriate, kinda! Quite powerful for late game mehthinks

Cute that escape, extort and cipher all made a cameo here

The Commander set has some great reprints, for which I am very glad, especially since WotC is now willing to put the filter lands from Shadowmoor/Eventide in a preconstructed set, which they have never done, before. Hopefully, this is an indication of the quality of all Commander sets in the future.

They started printing more scaling cards I've noticed, this is one of the key components (IMO) of good card design of a multiplayer format that I am happy to see. For example protection racket scales very well, even if the downside is very obvious. That is one example, but there were several smattered throughout where they obviously made cards for scaling impact.

The Obscura Smuggler's Share is a decent scaling card that I think will shoot out of budget. I personally think the conditions required will make a bit of a mirage & the card will be overpriced.

An interesting subtopic is; what cards do we think (Commander or main sets) will be less-hyped but powerhouses (particularly in EDH)? These would often end up being budget-overperformers that you pick up as a single for low-$

  1. Currency Converter: a low CMC rummage tool & some of the best Graveyard protection I've seen.
  2. Rose room treasurer: this ogre doesn't seem to have too many whispers...but man, even limited ramp when there are so many ways to make creatures on other turns.
  3. Prosperous partnership: ramp with an easy condition, ability to make 2 bodies at an aggressive 3 cmc.
  4. Stimulus package: opposite of prosperous partnership, good for similar reasons.

I noticed that only the enemy-colored filter lands from Shadowmoor/Eventide were reprinted in the Commander set; WotC reprinted the Odyssey filter lands, rather than the allied-colored filter lands from Shadowmoor/Eventide; is anyone else displeased by that? Would that have been too much value for the Commander decks to have?

In this article, Mark Rosewater stated that "Capenna" is, in fact, the name of the plane, and it is, indeed, Elspeth's home plane; I was hoping for a confirmation that was less casual than that, but Rosewater is a high authority on this game, so it is nice to finally have confirmation on that subject.

Angel of Suffering is male, and male angels are now used on occasion, breaking from the tradition of angels always being female, so when will there be female demons? Every demon in this game has been male, thus far, so I would like to see some female demons, at some point.
