Phyrexia: All Will Be One Spoilers and Discussion

Amazingly, there is not yet a thread for discussing Phyrexia: All Will Be One, so I am making such a thread, so that we may discuss the new set!

I am mostly very impressed by the set, thus far, except that the only instances of Phyrexian mana, thus far, are on planeswalkers, and, not only that, the planeswalkers still have normal mana symbols in their costs, and, even worse, they have less loyalty if their controller pays life to cast them; I understand that certain cards that used Phyrexian mana, such as Dismember or Mental Misstep, were extremely powerful, but did WotC really need to go this far in the other direction?

Also, why is the new Vraska mono-black, when she has more often been black/green in her previous portrayals?

The new Elesh Norn is awesome, so I shall definitely put her into my Chulane, Teller of Tales EDH deck.

I definitely like the new Glissa, although I do feel that she may be slightly too powerful, as she simply has too many great options for such a low cost, but that shall not stop me from putting her into my decks that support her colors.

How is everyone feeling about the set, thus far? Are you excited for it?

The new legendary phoenix seems pretty cool

Seems to have some pretty good power level to it, at least for Timmies, non-traditional control, & less tribal focused players. That is all good because they have just been hammering incremental tribal pieces or incremental artifact synergies in so many sets lately. All the Dominus seem pretty strong, though I am not sure I love doubling effects, they sometimes seem like a lazy designed, winmore, accidental combo waiting to happen.

just got a tiny bit of love today with: "All will be one" - now if I could just figure out a redsplash deck I have that works with counters?!? & "Solphim, Dominus of Mayhem" - Doubling non-combat dmg

You guys and gals think they'll bring back the artifact lands, or would that be too dangerous having those back in Modern? Because weren't the colored lands banned due to Affinity decks getting too much value from their use?

January 19, 2023 9:48 a.m.

I don't think they would be too bad if done right. The Bridge cycle from MH2 sees play, but not enough to be banworthy. and only a couple of the original artifact lands are banned iirc.

The five mono-colored that don't ETB tapped. The colorless one isn't banned anywhere.

I'm guessing you'll be casting Battles, but that they'll go to the command zone or exile when you do, making them nonpermanents. There they'll function as some combination of Dungeons, World Enchantments, and the Monarch. Maybe they'll use the "lock icon" mechanic from the original idea for Sagas so that it's not just about dealing combat damage to an opponent:

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/returning-home-2018-04-02

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/saga-sagas-2018-05-07

Again, don't think they'll be featured in ONE. This set is more small-scale, dealing with guerilla Rebels, Phyrexian in-fighting, and the drama of individual planeswalkers getting compleated.

Hell, toss in "Planes" in my abovementioned laundry list, since March of the Machine will feature a lot of them.

Articles are saying that Battle is a type being used in a future set, citing how the original Tarmogoyf apparently listed Planeswalker before they released

January 19, 2023 1:04 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #8

I'm guessing that we will see the Battle type in March of the Machines. I'd have to look for it, but MaRo stated on his Tumblr that Battles would be coming in a future set. Given that March of the Machines will be a big inter-planar conflict, it seems like the type of set where Battles would make sense to be introduced.

Going back to content that's actally confirmed:

Norn's Choirmaster feels like it's just going to be an expensive Grateful Apparition most of the time. The main exceptions are partner decks with a counter theme, e.g. Reyhan, Last of the Abzan + Tymna the Weaver or Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel + Nikara, Lair Scavenger. Maybe you could also use it in a flicker + counters theme deck?

(Speaking of which, when is black getting a Thrummingbird?)

Even though it's pretty weird that the mirran faction mechanic is a tweak on living weapon, I like the implied flavor of the token probably dying and then someone else taking up the sword, so to speak.

Without the haste, Goldwardens' Gambit could have easily been a white instant.

A little awkward that Otharri, Suns' Glory synergizes with proliferate

Hexgold Slash could have also dealt extra damage to creatures with oil counters on them

With corrupted around, Caress of Phyrexia got a little more interesting

Resistance Skywarden: pffft, one of the few cute and funny flavor texts in an otherwise very grimdark set.

January 19, 2023 3:27 p.m.

Ohhhhh baby! That is a spicy tribal commander if real...that's all I am going to say until it is confirmed.

Anyways, onto officially released cards:

New Atraxa is kind of disappointing. I mean, she is strong and the Battle mechanic is interesting and all, but really she is just a blink-value commander. Yawns

Feed the Infection is just a strictly better Ambition's Cost and I am here for it.

Monument of Perfection looks really cool, but unless we get more spheres or loci, it currently can't be activated in standard. Also....suuuuuuupper bad card to pull in limited.

Mirran Safehouse looks really interesting. I am already seeing comments about Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx lines in those weird 60 card formats :P Could be fun in graveyard based lands decks or to have a second copy of Cabal Coffers type lands. Also, play Petrified Field folks....

I was originally a bit down on our latest Sword of X-and-Y, but then I re-read it and realized that you exile the cards before the "play and extra land" trigger. This sword is really good. I don't think anything can usurp Sword of Feast and Famine, but this is definitely in the next tier below.

TypicalTimmy says... #12

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor, which tribal Commander are you referring to, if I may ask?

January 19, 2023 7:57 p.m.

TypicalTimmy it's not confirmed yet so I don't want to specifically say. But Commanders Quarters made a video about it today so go check that out. It looks like it will be one of those set booster only cards that they have been doing recently.

January 19, 2023 8:19 p.m.

TypicalTimmy says... #14

Let me ask, because he has 4 videos published for today.

Is it an artifact creature?

January 19, 2023 8:31 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #15

TypicalTimmy, I think they are referring to Urtet, Remains of Memnarch

Text translation:

Legendary Artifact Creature - Myr

Whenever you cast a Myr spell, create a 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature.

At the beginning of combat on your turn, untap each Myr you control.

, : Add 3 +1/+1 counters to each Myr you control. Activate this during your turn.

2/2

I was trying to be nonchalant about it, mate ;)

I popped on here to make a deck placeholder named Myrder by Numbers

Turns out younger Typical Timmy already did that (Seven!) years ago T_T

I'm so smart sometimes

Crow_Umbra says... #17

Lmao my bad TypicalTimmy, and also kudos to younger you from 7 years ago on the foresight. I think each time a commander that I know I'm going to build is spoiled, I immediately rush to my brewing sites to try to lay claim to my stupid pun names.

"Resistance Skywarden: pffft, one of the few cute and funny flavor texts in an otherwise very grimdark set."

That flavor text seems like a throwback to Ogre Resister. Maybe the same Ogre but has now joined the resistance.

On the topic of Battle, wasn't that an old mechanic? I feel like I have distinctly seen it before but Gatherer won't show anything.

It basically went;

  • "Each player reveals the top card of their library. Whichever player reveals the highest converted mana cost wins."

Wtf am I having a Mandela effect here or something??

OOOOOH IT WAS CLASH

January 20, 2023 7:38 p.m. Edited.

DemonDragonJ says... #20

TypicalTimmy, that is the clash mechanic, as seen on Broken Ambitions, Fistful of Force, or Lash Out.

Looks like Tibalt is compleated, and likely killed off by Tyvar. Showcased in a leaked card.

Because it is leaked, and not officially spoiled, I won't mention it by name or what it does. But the artwork shows Tyvar readying the killing blow against a compleated Tibalt.

Coward_Token says... #22

I don't think that Myr tribal card is real. It has a 5-color identity but also a ONE Commander Decks set symbol, even though neither of the two decks are more than three colors. I guess it could be a box topper or something though?

(Also, I only just realized that both of the commander decks are non-blue.)

January 22, 2023 8:08 a.m.

Coward_Token The card symbol is the only thing that gives me pause. However, the last few sets have had set-booster-only cards that all have the commander set symbol. Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary (DMU) and The Archimandrite (BRO) are examples of this.

And for what it's worth, the image leaked is of a fairly legit looking, physical card and not a digital image. Proxy's are pretty darn good these days, but seeing a physical card vs a digital image makes me more willing to accept it's real. We shall have our answer at the end of this week though!

January 22, 2023 9:32 a.m.

TypicalTimmy says... #24

Protip:

If you go to Cardkingdom and search officially spoiled cards, you can view their alternate Phyrexian artwork! These alternate arts are not yet put up on MythicSpoiler, but Cardkingdom has them :3

January 22, 2023 6:23 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #25

Phyrexian Vindicator: Very color-heavy, but I think white deserves a Stuffy Doll variant more than red with its Brash Taunter

Ichormoon Gauntlet: Lets uncommons from WAR like Narset, Parter of Veils beef themselves up, as well as Jeska, Thrice Reborn with a blue-inclsive partner. Teferi, Master of Time can give your collective PWs four counters a turn! Maybe there's a planeswalker that can easily get high loyalty but don't have much to spend it on, synergizing with the "extra ultimate"? Obviously, since proliferate lets you put a counter on each of your PWs, this becomes much better in superfriends, but more general counters decks can probably use that triggered ability as well.

January 23, 2023 11:44 a.m.

Finally! The enchantress wincon I have been looking for. I have been wanting to build an enchantress deck for so long, but kept finding the play style and wincons to be rather boring/repetitive. Even though Stuffy Doll has been around for ages, I never put 2-an-2 together until seeing Phyrexian Vindicator.

G/W enchantress burn here we go! Time to break out Guilty Conscience and Armadillo Cloak to pair with Aetherflux Reservoir.

As for other cards:

Get ready to see The Mycosynth Gardens in multiple formats. Card looks pretty strong and versatile.

Ichormoon Gauntlet seems borderline too much. Kill on sight in commander.

Tekuthal is cool. Seems more of a in the 99 type of card though.

Phyrexian Atlas has some of the coolest art of the set in my opinion. It's a shame that such an awesome depiction of the layers of New Phyrexia is scrunched up into a little card frame.

January 23, 2023 7:10 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #27

Kinda wish Phyrexian Vindicator had vigilance, attacking with flying will often mean that its ability won't matter.

Tekuthal: Yeah as a commander I want to see this as Chisei, Heart of Oceans on crack, but combining proliferate with counter removal seems kinda hard.

Vat of Rebirth: One mana! Both creatures and artifacts! No nontoken clause! You could sacrifice four Treasures, reanimate one of your creatures, and still have a mana to spare!

Tainted Observer: Okay WotC, I get that Phyrexia is weird and all, but you can't convince me that this isn't just a Horror and not a Bird. Anyway, no nontoken clause here either, not bad.

Storywise, I don't really get the red Phyrexians. Are they okay with the Mirrans or not? Seems kinda like stupid writing for them to attack the rebels when they are themselves rebelling.

Kinda sad that Geth died, his pragmaticsm and card mechanics were fun, but I suspect New Phyrexia isn't long for this world so it'd probably be hard to keep him alive anyway

Tibalt kinda came, and left, out of nowhere. Here's hoping he at least gets a card in March of the Machine.

January 24, 2023 1:06 a.m.

Delphen7 says... #28

I think Tekuthal is weaker than Chisei for counter removal because it can't remove from enchantments, and Mystic Remora is where Chisei really shines (and sagas). But the proliferate is something else.

January 24, 2023 9:32 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #29

Delphen7: Oh damn you're right, sorry

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor: Of course, you can just stick Guilty Conscience on the Vindicator and swing for the win

Coward_Token says... #30

ahhhhhh you did write Guilty Conscience, not Pariah

Yeah I'm on an anti-roll today

Coward_Token says... #31

We all know by now that I have foot-in-mouth-disease

Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant: Wait, not Phyrexian? How has nobody hunted down and compleated this things? Seems awfully conspicious.

Monumental Corruption: Has this effect really not been done yet in blue?

Skyhunter Strike Force - Crow-Umbra another new Isshin card? I think so!

January 24, 2023 11:19 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #33

Absolutely KBK7101! My Skyhunter Strike Force submission was approved earlier today. Hopefully it will be live for edits in the next couple days.

It's likely going to replace Adriana, Captain of the Guard in my deck.

Between Skyhunter, Mondrak, Glory Dominus, & Otharri, Suns' Glory, I'm pretty happy with this set. I think Voltron Equipment Isshin lists will be eating well with some of the For Mirrordin! equipment support.

I am very displeased that Staff of Compleation costs 5 mana to untap, when Staff of Domination costs only 1 mana for that, but, I suppose that that ability is so expensive to balance out the fact that its other abilities cost no mana to use.

TheoryCrafter says... #35

My thoughts on this set:

Melira, the Living Cure should've been able to remove poison counters even if the ability was similar to Leeches.

All Will Be One and Soul-Scar Mage together just turned a lot of cheap cards pinging all creatures on the battlefield into board wipes. And if you happen to have Bonfire of the Damned to cast you could end up winning the game.

I know the stories explained it, but I would love to had seen cards explaining how Lukka and Nissa were compleated. Though compleating Nissa kinda irks me because the story she was in in The Brothers War implied she survived the war with New Phyrexia.

Nahiri, the Unforgiving and Bladegraft Aspirant could end up vital in Boros reconfigure decks.

I like Corrupted. A good way to take advantage of poison without directly using it to win. Vishgraz, the Doomhive is the poison Commander we deserve.

Only sacrifice to draw a card?? 5 of the Sphere lands feel underwheling compared to the rest.

If you are building a oil counter deck for an eternal format, make sure to add Nesting Grounds to the deck.

In Superfriends decks, Ichormoon Gauntlet and Kasmina, Enigma Sage together could result in multiple -12 activations in a turn.

With Vraska a primarily black Planeswalker and Tyvar also a Planeswalker, it fits that she got the monoblack card. Anyone else notice the similarities between the ultimates of Vraska, Betrayal's Sting and Vraska, Relic Seeker?

As happy as I am Terramorphic Expanse got reprinted into Standard, I think Evolving Wilds would've made for a more flavorful choice.

Thrun was declared the last Troll BEFORE the Phyrexians rose. So what's with Oil-Gorger Troll?

Kaito, Dancing Shadow should be a staple in Etrata, the Silencer decks.

February 3, 2023 12:27 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #36

@TheoryCrafter

Exile Melira, the Living Cure: You lose all poison counters. You skip your next X turns, where X is the number of counters lost this way.

I like the colored Spheres for mono-colored decks with unreliable card draw

Yeah I can only assume the Phyrexians reanimated a Troll corpse, somehow without making it a Zombie. Or maybe Thrun was pregnant for several years.

Good catch on the Etrata synergy

February 3, 2023 12:07 p.m.

TheoryCrafter says... #37

Coward_Token, I can see skipping a turn for three or more poison counters, but one for each poison counter is too much.

February 4, 2023 8:06 p.m.

I am worried this set will have a rough limited environment. Sealed and draft are different beasts, but everything is indicating that it's basically going to be: Do you want to win? Draft some iteration of Abzan.

Blue seems like a non-starter unless you open either Tekuthal or Blue Sun's Twilight. Red seems strong, but I don't know if it's various permutations besides Boros are fast enough to contend with the Toxic decks.

Like, GW Toxic's curve ends at 4 mana, maybe 5 if you want to run that hasty dinosaur. B/G Toxic wants to go a bit bigger but has a ton of removal. B/W Toxic trades the two amazing Toxic lords in G/W and B/G for all of it's creatures having evasion, has a similar curve out to G/W, and has black's removal. Hopefully I am wrong, but this draft format is giving me New Capenna/AFR vibes.

February 5, 2023 2:37 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #39

TheoryCrafter: Yeah it was a joke, partially as a reference to how much Mark Rosewater hates Leeches and the concept of poison counter removal in general.

February 5, 2023 4:22 p.m.

Delphen7 says... #40

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor That seems to be the case.

I went 5-0 (Abzan toxic spashing blue for Atraxa), and the other top decks were variations on Jund/Abzan toxic with Orzhov goodstuff making an appearance. Blue didn't seem that great overall unfortunately.
