Hands up, who would have guessed domri rade as the slightly better than bad planeswalker of the set?

Griseldaddy is nice.

Okay, so what this seems to reveal:

Very likely Domri Rade, Griselbrand and Stoic Angel reprints.

Possible Snapcaster reprint with new art.

Packs

Box

But did we really need a Domri Rade reprint? Or Stoic Angel? They seem to be some very bad reprints.

rockleemyhero exactly same here. I'm scared

The set will prob be on par with MM15 as they sold fairly well, and was not price inflated. Wizards is trying to get a draft format with these card first, and then enough value that the prices after price drops are taken into effect are not so high that stores either horde the product or jack up the price. So anyone hoping for value along the lines of the original MM will be very disappointed. I hear everyone complaining about MM 2015, but it quickly sold out at msrp and a lil above around here, so it couldn't of been too bad as far as Matel is concerned. I hope we will see a lil less $ in the mythic spot and more in the common/uncommon spots. As some of the commons and uncommons are over priced cause they are 4 ofs in multiple decks or formats and from smaller print runs.

Why is a card like Stoic Angel on the cover of the pack? I see her being used in Atraxa decks.

pskinn01 says... #17

its prob key card in one of the draft archetypes.

None of this gets me very hyped, but it's still early.

Honestly, as long as the printing process doesn't have errors like MM15 did, I'll buy at least a box or so. I'm still incensed about that debacle. Remember how almost every pack had damaged cards, or poorly-printed colors and errors? Almost every card in my first box was faded, had chipped edges, was mis-cut, or was otherwise screwed up. Makes one pretty darned angry when they charge a premium price for such a shabbily-produced product.

They really need to make the effort to ensure that none of these problems, including box sorting errors, appear with this new MM set. Anything less should be unacceptable.

February 21, 2017 8:07 a.m.

Dorotheus says... #20

Damaged cards since Innistrad and increasing in every set, and all packs since then, definitely gets under my skin, luckily all the damaged cards I've gotten are unplayable commons, so far.

Oh that IS Snapcaster Mage, no doubt about it. Or should I say, it has to be - or else WotC is either incredibly stupid or actively trolling us. I mean... they know everyone's hoping for a Snappy reprint in MM3. They wouldn't put a picture of a guy that looks like a wizard casting a spell over a freaking blue background on an MM3 box if it wasn't him. They can't be that cruel.

Wow I hadn't seen Stoic Angel before. I mostly play Commander and haven't seen any decks that using her.

I just wanted to say... she's pretty cute! :)

February 21, 2017 4:32 p.m.

My personal wishlist for MM17: Mishra's Bauble, Snapcaster Mage, Liliana of the Veil, Through the Breach, Chalice of the Void, Engineered Explosives, Tarmogoyf, and Auriok Champion.

Hopefully we get some nice things that I can pick up a few months after the hype dies down. :)

griz024 says... #25

God i hope that guy on the box isnt the new snappy art.

The old art great (its an invitational winner and the only asian in all of innistrad),so i hope they just keep it the same!

February 21, 2017 5:58 p.m.

saj0219 says... #26

GeminiSpartanX, I hate to cast some doubt on that wishlist, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Lili. I thought she was a shoe in until the packaging was revealed... but if memory serves, every other masters set has only had a single planeswalker (thanks Domri Rade for ruining my dreams). I could be totally off, but I'm no longer sold on her presence in the set...

February 21, 2017 6:39 p.m.

Twanicus says... #27

negative. 2015 had Tezz and Karn, MM1 had elspeth and sarkan.

February 21, 2017 7:04 p.m.

GeminiSpartanX Id be alright with most of that
Im still holding out for Doubling Season

February 21, 2017 7:24 p.m.

griz024 Unfortunately, I think it is. Needed reprint with new art on the box has been done for EMA, and MM2 and MM1 had not so needed reprints. I'm not too psyched on the new art myself, but hopefully it will push down the prices of the old version a bit.

February 21, 2017 8:49 p.m.

saj0219 says... #30

See - memory is the worst! I guess I'll amend my statement to say there's always one forgettable walker (and I suppose Domri Rade gets that prize so Lili's still got a good shot)

(sorry if I'm getting a little off topic here)

The old Snapcaster Mage art is pretty terrible, IMO. No sense of movement or depth, ugly ass background, ugly ass armor, awkward pose, and that thing that looks like a Saiyan Scouter in his eye just ticks me off for whatever reason. There's no way you look at that guy and think "hey, there's a guy that casts spells in the blink of an eye". And somehow the first draft of the artwork looks even worse. Glad that one was scrapped.

Anyway, if they replaced the art that had Bob Maher's face in it for Dark Confidant reprints, I can't see why they wouldn't do it with Tiago Chan's. I like reprints with different art, it's nice to see more than one artist's take on the same idea - especially when they have an unique style. I miss Rebecca Guay :(

Imagine the sadness if it's not Snapcaster Mage and is instead just an Izzet Staticaster.

February 22, 2017 10:30 a.m.

Dare I hope for shocklands?

February 22, 2017 10:55 a.m.

Am I the only one here who just wants the set to provide a good draft environment? ENM did a pretty good job, but MM15 was terrible...

The only cards I really care about seeing reprinted would be Damnation or Doubling Season for EDH purposes, but really I just want to be able to draft fun cards that I have yet to play.

I don't understand why people are so upset about the packaging having Domri Rade and Stoic Angel. We've seen a grand total of three cards that are going to be in M17. Not every card can be a highly valued chase card, else they'd be charging forty dollars a pack.

I feel like Masters expansions tend to bring out the entitlement in players. People were upset that Comet Storm was a mythic in M15, and maybe they were right. But at the same time, I saw almost no negativity towards Subterranean Tremors being printed in Conspiracy 2, even when Leovold, Emissary of Trest was at the same rarity. We're going to get plenty of goodies in this set; you don't need to worry about the best cards not being the Very First ones spoiled.

That being said, I do find it interesting that they chose these three cards to display on their packaging. The original Modern Masters booster packs had Vedalken Shackles, Sword of Fire and Ice, and Dark Confidant, three mythic rares that were very valuable. Modern Masters 2 had Karn Liberated, Noble Hierarch, and Vendilion Clique. Two mythics and a rare, and once again they were all chase cards. So the fact that none of the MM3 packages have "chase cards" on them is already a sign that it's going to be a bad set, right? Maybe not. Eternal Masters packaging had Bloodbraid Elf, Deathrite Shaman, and Goblin Charbelcher, none of which are mythic and none of which even exceed ten dollars! And yet I heard very few complaints about Eternal Masters being a bad set, or even having bad packaging.

tl;dr - don't judge a book by its cover, especially when it's nothing more than booster box packaging. Seriously. It's not like these are the only three cards in the set.

No yeah for sure, though I would point out that this has been oddly done by WOTC. For the First Modern Masters set, Tarmogoyf was the first thing spoiled, long before the set even came out, even before the packaging (I believe). I find it strange that this time they opened with a bunch of cards that while not bad (hello Griselbrand), aren't the most exciting. I suppose maybe they are trying to avoid a repeat of MM2015, where they spoiled most of the best stuff at the start, and people where so caught up with the rest being "trash" that people actually bought a fake article previewing Magmaw as a "big card" in the set (it was a pretty hilarious joke actually). Well that's my two cents anyway.

ThinkJank says... #41

Spoiler season is a delicate thing. Modern Masters 2013 was the first masters expansion they'd ever done, so it made sense for them to show the single most valuable card in the expansion before the others, to generate hype. They dropped the ball during MM2 and showed us nothing But sweet cards for the first few spoilers, which meant that people were overhyped for the set. Eternal Masters struck a nice balance, in my opinion, and I hope that MM3 follows in those footsteps.

February 23, 2017 2:13 p.m.

I really doubt that even 1/3 of these cards will see a reprint, although I would be extremely happy if this list was accurate. I'd buy boxes all day.

Wotc actually reprinting good cards? I want to believe it. I really want to, but I don't.

February 24, 2017 6:50 a.m.

saj0219 says... #45

The cheapest card on that list is Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, its missing two of the cards on the packaging (Domri Rade and Stoic Angel), four lands, nine colorless cards... reads more like a wishlist to me. I think I'm with GeminiSpartanX - most of those won't make it in (though I'm sure some of the cards on that list will be there)

Is it possible to merge the "Modern Masters 2017 wishlist/speculation" thread that I started with this one? There is no need to have two separate threads discussing this set.

I, also, say that it is far too early to judge the entire set based upon the few cards that have been revealed. Not every card can be a very valuable one, but I do hope that WotC does not reprint Dark Confidant and Tarmogoyf again, since those cards were reprinted in both of the previous two Modern Masters sets, and also that they do not print a very inexpensive card, such as Comet Storm, as a mythic rare (that card definitely should have been downgraded to a normal rare, in my mind).

I shall share the general opinion that the person on the artwork is Snapcaster Mage, since the previous two sets gave new artwork to Dark Confidant and Shadowmage Infiltrator, two other cards that were designed by winners of events.

100% snappy box art

Wizards might not give us all we want, but a $45 blue creature played in multiple formats would definitely be a target.

I think the chase rares are probable goyf, snappy, Bob, guide, resto, scapeshift, inquisition, and clique
