Where to Find Kaldheim Previews

The prediction/speculation thread got kind of long so I thought I'd start things over fresh. We got some early previews this week + Christmas Eve before January kicks things off in a more normal fashion.

15/12 band spoilers (see Twitter & Facebook) Show

Since red/white is creature heavy strategy, chapter 3 will still benefit creatures you cast on previous turn. But wish they'd allow the cards to be available till the end of turn that the saga left the battlefield.

Well, we seem to have a massive tribal set. So far, we got tribal support for elves, dwarves, giants and angels, and a return of changeling. That's pretty cool.

Looks like elves, dwarves, and angel tribal so far.

Though, if I don't get some trolls, I'm going to be less than happy.

Whew, didn't expect this much to be spoiled, especially not outside of the band previews.

Those Shapeshifters sure look creepy, from this art I just thought it was a masked elf

Is there mythological basic for the valkyries? Anyway, nice to see that Angel tribal is finally getting some proper attention.

Magda -> Dockside Extortionist can probably lead to you assembling an instant win combo on the right board.

I am very pleased to see that this set shall contain sagas, since the word "saga" is of Norse origin; I only hope that this set shall contain krakens, since WotC had the nerve to include krakens in the Theros block, despite the fact that krakens originated from Norse mythology, not Greek mythology.

I am very glad that this set contains giants, elves, and dwarves, all of which were prominent in Norse mythology, but I was hoping that valkyries would be red/white angels, not mono-white angels, since they were renowned for their fearsome prowess in battle; thus far, no demons have been revealed, so this may be the first plane to have angels, without demons, since there have already been several planes that had demons without angels; valkyrie harbinger, in particular, is almost entirely superior to both Angelic Accord and Resplendent Angel.

DemonDragonJ: I suggest inspecting Cleaving Reaper for your two first points on Angels ;)

Just gunna say Eladamri, Lord of Leaves will more than likely be prohibitively expensive after this set drops. Its market is 35 but you can snag an HP one for 17. If you like elf tribal now is the time to pick this up.

December 16, 2020 7:03 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #10

Hm.... I guess they're dropping the pattern of making Gods hard to kill? Guess it makes sense here, AFAIK in the myths Norse gods do things that are a bit more low-key compared; Thor is closer to Heracles than Zeus. Anyway, MDFC where both sides are nonland seems kinda awkward, especially for draft; gotta memorize the back if you don't want to tip off what you got. On the plus side, here's a reason run 4 of a legendary card; the God side is free to wield the Equipment side, Nicol Bludegon-style And yes, we finally got an Equipment commander.

Kaya sadly doesn't actually Ghostforms, just Rancors.

We also got a repeatable Pernicious Deed, kinda, in the command zone in case that's something someone ordered. Maybe break parity with cards that have artificially high CMC like The Great Henge? Not really to my tastes, the exile part is especially harsh.

Also I kinda wonder if this set will contain any Krakens, since MtG ones are really Clash of the Titans ripoffs rather than the giant Squids from actual Norse myth. Maybe something that makes a 10/10 Squid token tho?

December 18, 2020 4:29 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #16

Then again the recent Trench Behemoth is quite squid-y so w/e ¯I_(ツ)_I¯

(hopefully no Tidal Kraken reprint at least)

December 18, 2020 4:48 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #17

Coward_Token, I do hope that there shall be some krakens in this set, since kraken originated in Norse mythology, not Greek mythology, as some people seem to believe.

I also would very much like to see both Frost Titan and Inferno Titan reprinted in this set, because this set is the perfect place for such creatures to be reprinted.

Also, another website "revealed" that Vorinclex will be appearing in this set, but I suspect that the card that was spoiled is a fake, since WotC would not have Phyrexia invade another plane in that plane's initial appearance. Does anyone here agree with that reasoning?

December 22, 2020 9:54 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #18

That sounds like an unofficial leak, so I'd let it go uncommented.

: )

December 24, 2020 5:14 p.m.

Oh hell yeah! Troski is a perfect commander for my squirrel deck. I kinda wish he was a little more tribal focused (and 1 cmc lower costed), but having the best half of an Ohran Frostfang in the command zone is pretty awesome.

December 24, 2020 5:58 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #21

Also, regarding the new Vorinclex, WotC has said that they will not male "Phyrexian" its own creature type, because there is no need to do so, so I hope that that is further evidence against that card being fake.

Ha! Called it, Snow duals! 4/6 on my predictions so far. And we got probably the closest thing to a Lightning Bolt reprint that we are ever going to get.

January 7, 2021 10:47 p.m.

RNR_Gaming says... #25

I like mini Vorn. I can see him doing great things in a Neoform/Eldritch Evolution deck. Mainly, with Jace, Architect of Thought

January 7, 2021 11:04 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #26

Now that the spoilers have begun in full, I have much to say.

First, it is nice to have a full cycle of ten dual lands; they will be inferior to the shocklands and battle lands in the majority of situations, but at least they are superior to the snow dual lands from Coldsnap, and I also very much appreciate how they have names that do not reference any specific location or faction, which shall allow them to be reprinted on any plane in future sets.

It is nice to see Tibalt, again, and, this time, with the colors that properly align with his personality and abilities. If he is impersonating Valki, where is the real Valki?

Koll, the forgemaster is nice, but I feel that red/white really needs to expand its identity beyond combat and/or aura/equipment, which is why Feather, the Redeemed is such a great card.

How are snow sorceries different from normal sorceries? Do they simply interact with any effects that care about snow cards?

January 7, 2021 11:15 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #27

Sorry about the double post, but I made my previous before I had finished typing everything.

There is a card named Binding of the Old Gods; does that have any connection to The Binding of the Titans from Theros: Beyond Death?

I really do not like how reflections of Littjara allows copying of permanent spells, so soon after the ability appeared in Zendikar Rising, becuase I was hoping it would be a very rare ability, and not one that appears very often, and it does not even allow a player to choose new targets for instant and sorcery spells.

January 7, 2021 11:21 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #28

One other thing that worries me is that WotC is too heavily playing into modern popular culture connections between Norse mythology and heavy metal music; I am fond of both of those elements, and I am glad to see them being represented, here, but I hope that WotC remembers that the Norse were more than fearsome warriors; they were also brave explorers, imaginative storytellers, peaceful farmers, and expert artisans (at least in the realms of blacksmithing/metallurgy), and Norse women actually had a fairly good social status, compared to women in many other regions of the world, at that time.

January 7, 2021 11:25 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #29

DemonDragonJ: see this, some culture-related world building

Tergrid: It That Betrays in the command zone at CMC 5. Well okay no Annihilator but still.

The World Tree: +1 explosive Arcane Adaptation synergy. Even if it comes down late, mana fixing for rainbow decks isn't too bad either.

Cosmos Charger: Are those extra Sleipnir legs in between each set of regular ones? (...)

January 8, 2021 7:11 p.m.

Holy crap! Tegrid is pure perfection.

DemonDragonJ - See cards like Frostbite or Blood on the Snow for the answer to your snow sorcery/instant question. Basically you get an added benefit or a boost in power depending on snow mana/permanents.

January 8, 2021 7:33 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #31

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil, the world tree, was literally the foundation of the universe, so it is a gross injustice to think that it can be represented in this game by a single land card. I shall reconcile that by believing that that card represents only a small portion of the entire world tree, which itself is too grand, powerful, and/or mysterious for mortals to comprehend or even perceive its entire existence.

Also, Koma, cosmos serpent is very awesome, but 6/6, while not weak by most standards, is fairly small for a creature inspired by Jormungandur, who was supposedly of such great size that it could coil the entire world.

Reckless Crew 3R

Sorcery

Create X 2/1 red Dwarf creature tokens, where X is the number of Vehicles you control plus the number of Equipments you control. For each of those tokens, you may attach an Equipment you control to it.

There's a decent amount of equipped matters cards that likes this. Bloodforged Battle-Axe & Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith obviously helps generate more tokens.

January 9, 2021 7:36 a.m.

Coward_Token - Tergrid may not, but Kroxa and Nekusar certainly do.

That foretell counter spell is really strong. 1 for an unconditional counter spell with no drawbacks is insane. And the nice thing is, you don't care if your opponent knows about it. So far I love the designs of this new counterspell and that new Lightning Bolt. Now we just need a snow matters legend (and then I'll be 5/6 on my predictions :P).

I do kind of agree that Koma is a bit underwhelming for what it represents, though I don't think Simic really needs anymore busted legends. But they could have just made it a 10/10 with the same abilities for a bit more mana and that would've suffice.

I love everything about the World Tree. It's strong, but not busted (because green doesn't need anymore busted cards in commander). The fact that it's not legendary because it connects multiple planes in the multiverse is pretty flavorful. Seems well designed. Also, now we know how Vorinclex ended up on Kaldheim, but also, RIP Kaldheim. We barely knew you.

Goldspan Dragon might just make it into my Malcolm/Breeches "tribal pirate" EDH deck. That is so much mana when the deck goes off.

Esika's Chariot: Ghired, Conclave Exile on wheels, kinda (it targets). Kinda surprised they didn't name this after Kolvori, God of Kinship  Flip, she seems the closest to Freyja (her flipside even has mentions love, and I think it's a reference to the Brísingamen).

Also, kitties!

Replicating Ring: for better or worse, its tokens don't re-copy. Even if you got unlimited proliferate sources, you're going to have to wait three turns for that extra 8 mana

Undersea Invader: Looks like Slinking Giant got smart and finally found that hiding place

I'm just now catching up on the spoilers, and I'm seeing a watermark on cards like Augury Raven and Sarulf's Packmate. Is that related to the gods, or to some story beat, or something?

Maybe it's just me, and I know there's a second world-building article coming out later, but Skybreen is starting to feel a little out of place. It doesn't have any mechanical or flavor connection so far, and it's not mentioned in the first world-building article or any card I've seen. Did I miss something?

Draugr Necromancer: In EDH, different controllers of a Necromancer can still cast ice'd cards even if theirs in particular didn't do the deed. Doesn't stop token death triggers.

January 10, 2021 2:59 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #44

Moritte of the Frost: animated Clever Impersonator in the command zone, but only your permanents (but not just your creatures). AFAIK unlike Sakashima the Impostor it does copy the permanent's name, so other legendaries are a no-no.

January 11, 2021 12:32 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #45

oh, Moritte doesn't turn into a creature version of noncreature permanents ._.

January 11, 2021 12:33 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #46

Tibalt's Trickery: I myself thought of a riff off Chaos Warp (Spell Warp) before I saw this, but I figured it'd be too much of a stretch. Guess not, but this is a set that also contains Ravenform. Anyway, since this official version lets you target your own spells, I assume the random milling is to make it unreliable to stack your topdeck.

"Flying" Rune: The never ending quest of solving the 2-for-1 problem with creature Auras continues, and this latest attempt is pretty neat; you can choose between giving a creature the benefits of the Aura directly, or you can let an Equipment play the middleman.

January 11, 2021 12:10 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #47

Toralf: burn trample, like a less risky Repercussion. Can obviously threaten to finish people off out of the command zone for with Blasphemous Act.

January 11, 2021 12:20 p.m.

Wow, so red gets a hard counterspell. Didn't see that coming but seems like it will replace Red Elemental Blast and it's ilk in a lot of decks.

And we get a strictly better version of Rune-Scarred Demon. That's going right into my Balthor deck.

Finally, I am a huuuuuuge fan Kardur. ETB goad on a commander is strong. You can routinely blink him with Conjurer's Closet so your opponents can never attack you. He plays nicely with Akroan Horse effects by giving you opponents things to attack with that will die. And finally, with the way that combat works, throw in a sac outlet, swing out at an opponent, deal combat damage, and then sac each creature before the combat phase ends for extra drain. I love this card through and through, it's pretty pushed for an uncommon legend.

Dual Strike

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng Storm card! Turn two this into turn three Desperate Ritual into Pyromancer Ascension and more Desperate Rituals + Manamorphose -> Grapeshot for 9,000 on turn 3. The best part is it can copy other cards of itself to build up more Storm count, even when you don't use the Foretell.
