Idol of Oblivion

This gives me vibes, I feel like the eldrazi are somehow returning, the ability and flavor text both arouse suspicion, any thoughts?

It is from a supplemental set and has no bearing on the storyline. Just like Modern Horizons doesn't mean that Urza and Yawgmoth are returning C19 doesn't mean Eldrazi are returning.

The Eldrazi were worshipped as gods by people on Zendikar who didn't know any better. The statue looks closer to Cosi than to Ula, which would make the worshippers vampires. Although they dont know the true destructive nature of Kozilek, it would be well within their character to want their god Cosi to cleanse the world.

I've got to disagree. The statue on Idol of Oblivion looks like the one on the left of Shrine of the Forsaken Gods . The armored and helmated one that looks like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre . Not the robed and "crowned" one that looks like Kozilek, the Great Distortion Although you can see the spikey halo that the "crown" evokes better on Kozilek's Return . If it is one of the three Old Gods of Zendikar it is definitely Ula.

WoTC got the message, loud and clear, that the community was beyond tired of Eldrazi after Battle For Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch, Shadows Over Innistrad, and Eldritch Moon all had an Eldrazi focus (less so with SOI, but the block certainly covered it). We won't be seeing Eldrazi again for a long time. At this point, we're much more likely to get a return of the Phyrexians and other villains. Also, as was pointed out, the Commander sets can supplement story stuff, but they don't drive it forward so that flavor text and art are more likely a callback to the original Zendikar block than foreshadowing of anything.

I prefer to consider the damage you need to deal in order to win instead of damage you need to receive in order to lose. It is highly unlikely that more than one player will be playing infect, so that player needs to deal 10 damage to each opponent, or 30 damage. The remaining players are all working on life totals and so need to deal 17 each to the infect player and 20 each to the other 2 opponents, or 57 damage. So infect is harder to pull off in commander than in 60 card.

If there are multiple infect players the math changes, but there are also super simple ways to completely hose infect that are decent on their own in other interactions.

Magic has three "great" villains that they keep returning to - the Eldrazi, which were done to excess a while back; Nicol Bolas, which was just done to excess; and Phyrexia, Magic's oldest threat, whose return Wizards has been hinting about (Karn mentioned he wanted to deal with Phyrexia after Bolas; bringing back the Weatherlight, a ship inexorably tied to the old Phyrexia stories).

I expect the next big bad guys will be Phyrexia, and, if past experience holds true, we will have Phyrexia be the bad guys for a couple years. After that, I think it is reasonable to expect either Emrakul to return and take up the mantle of big baddie again, though I would personally hope for something entirely new. There might also be a buffer zone of one year dealing with the aftermath of Bolas, rather than going right into Phyrexia.

All-in-all, I would expect it to be a minimum of 2-4 years before the Eldrazi make a comeback, and quite possibly as long as 7 years.

Also I don't think they're gonna do another return set soon, since they just did a huge return set and wrapped up a major story line in the process. So my guess is they'll be saving Eldrazi and Phyrexian for a return set. My guess is theres probably gonna be a new big bad before we get a return to Eldrazi.

In the case of "new bad guy story" may I remind you Garruk is still running amok somewhere. Also Lily and Tezz have bounties on their heads, so that'll have to be sorted out eventually.

Ashiok is also planning something big, and could be gearing up to become a Gatewatch-level threat.

TypicalTimmy, I very much agree with that; if it takes 10 poison counters to defeat a player in a "normal" game, it should take 20 to defeat them in a game of EDH.

I don't think Eldrazi will reappear in a "story" set, maybe just a core set.

I'm over Eldrazi at the moment.

I built a multiplayer deck recently with Eldrazi and people HATE playing against it.

That doesn't suit my personality, so I am done with them for a while.

I'd rather see Slivers return, and that's saying something as Slivers are my first hate.
