Did you like zendikar?

Hello sentient masses of the hive mind,

I was wondering what you peoples thought about zendikar rising. Do you like it more/less than previous zendikar sets? How do you like the mechanics, and are there any specific cards you like? I want to make a commander deck based around the new tazri and the party mechanic.

I don't like it more than previous Zendikars, but I do like some of the cards that have been introduced.

Flip spell/lands is HUGE for efficiency in deck composition.

More landfall tech is cool and appreciated.

Ruin Crab, Valakut Exploration, and Valakut Awakening  Flip are nice.

Party is going to be very niche for now (entertaining for EDH at least), but will probably explode next year when they add the D&D themed set.

I'm meh on most of kicker generally, but there's some decent/broken tech in there too.

(Hail to the Crab king)

Overall a solid set. Lots of powerful cards and every box is going to come with a box topper expeditions. So long as those expedition packs are sealed within the box/packaging I won't complain :)

I liked bfz and oath more because they had eldrazi. Started playing right after og zendikar block so I can't speak for that. But this set checks all the boxes. The mythics feel like mythics cool dual land cycle (odd its 6 cards). Powerful rares and cards for almost every format cool legendaries. The planeswalkers are all kinda meh

Have a love/hate with the new set.

Omnath, Locus of Creation feels a little less amazing after some playtesting, on the other hand it creates an explosive turn.

There's some powerful Modern potential cards in there, but for the most part the set feels like playing the Invasion block years ago with Domain and Questing Phelddagrif so they get some points for the nostalgiaesque feeling that I'm having.

Looks ok... just hope the price point isn't outrageous. I feel as though the "oh you get expeditions with every box!" is a bit misleading given the percentages of actually cracking the "good" ones, and I hardly think any prices will drop as a result of "reprinting" these lands. Don't get me wrong: I am probably going to splurge and buy Fetches once this set drops (Shocks too, because of rotation), but I'm still disappointed with the way they "reprinted" these staples.

Was hoping for Trap cards to return. Ended up disappointed.

As someone who plays only Alesha in EDH I was disappointed to see yet another new Fleshbag Marauder creature with power 3. There’s now 5 creatures with this effect, all of which with 3 or 4 power which feels like I’m getting dunked on at this point. Skyclave Apparition at least makes up for it and Soul Shatter is cool too.

I’ve been wanting Vampire Nighthawk to be reprinted into Pioneer, so Nighthawk Scavenger was really cool.

As a Modern burn player Wayward Guide-Beast is unplayable. Maybe if they gave it +1 power instead of Trample I would have to reconsider as it’s drawback is too severe despite trying to be a throwback to Goblin Guide.

Skyclave Shade is absolutely cool. Half-tempted to build a Modern or Pioneer deck with it, Phoenix of Ash and nothing but hard removal spells to back them up.

Party mechanic is kind of cool. White was clerics, Blue was wizards, Black was rogues, and Red was Warriors. Why they didn’t make Green be Archers is very disappointing to me though.

I guess it in all was alright.

I don’t like it as much as OG Zendikar, but that’s because my first set I really got into was Rise of the Eldrazi, so that’ll always be my favorite set. And it’ll be a long time before they print creatures as big and nasty as those eldrazi were, which is what I really want.

But, when not taking those points into account, I’m moderately pleased with the set. There’s a number of mythics I’d like to get, and I love the Pathway land cycle. There’s a lot of niche cards in this set (mainly the spell lands) but not a whole lot of generally good stuff either. For me, anyway. I hope it’s better than I think. I like the set

Omniscience_is_life They're getting their actual reprint in Modern Horizons 2 next year. These are just loto cards for this set.

Yeah my favorite part is that you automatically get a expedition.

I'm wondering what the "chance" is for the decent expeditions. Buying lots of boxes just for that reason feels kinda meh. Buying 6 boxes to end up with 4 + Bountiful Promenade when I don't really play EDH seems like a rip on the highest level. Even if I did play EDH, it would be terrible.

I'm extremely hyped for the set. I think people are sleeping on how useful the new land / spell modal cards are going to be for deck building in Commander. I think that lots of them will be ultra staples in the years to come. Kind of like the way companions managed to find their way into every constructed deck before the nerf, I think some of these new modal cards will find their way into virtually every commander deck. I'm planning on picking up a bunch of 'em.

I definitely enjoy the set. A lot of the cards aren’t particularly exciting but I’m enticed to hop on Arena and grind out some wildcards to play upcoming standard.

RNR_Gaming but only enemy fetches, right? That gets me riled up as a Naya player. I want all the fetches...

Gotta say this set doesn't wow me. I know there are interesting things with the new "land" type cards but overall I am just not feeling it. But I do say this with not having taken a serious look at most of it though. So in a nutshell I liked the original sets better.

Never played the orginal set. Zendikar feels like Eldraine just without the fairy tales and more 'the land is coming alive' focused.

Seems like a fun set coming out but like psionictemplar, I'm not wowed. I'll pick up 10 or so singles and call it good.

As a lands player, I'm actually a little disapointed with most of the landfall abilities and general land mechanics. Modal lands are powerful, and I understand why the attached spells need to be powered down, otherwise the card would be too OP. But nothing really excites me. The new Omnath is cool and I love the Ancient Greenwarden, but that's about it.

The new whirlpool island art is sick though

Short answer: Yes! Long answer: little pissed elves got the shaft. It's freaking Zendikar home of oracle of mul days, joraga warcaller and Nissa Revane (racist Nissa)!!! But my second favorite tribe (elementals) got mad love! Digging on Ashaya and Ancient Greenwarden and begging for WUBRG Omnath more then ever. Got some upgrades for my Omnath locus of the roil deck.

Yeah it's only a reprint of the enemy ones will probably need to wait until mh3 for ally ones

I'm actually just excited that Wylie Beckert is getting some work. He's new to the game but I love his art.

Soul Shatter

Reclaim the Wastes

Thwart the Grave

I actually really like the set, but then again land based strategies are my second favorite archetype next to reanimation. Plus I love that they went back to the exploration theme of OG Zendikar. My only gripe is that I would've liked to have seen one or two eldrazi related cards. Nothing crazy, just something to give a nod to the fact that the plane was nearly consumed by the inter-planar janitorial squad (I have a theory that the Eldrazi consume planes so that other planes may be created naturally).

There is Forsaken Monument. Pretty sure it's a monument to Ulamog.

Has anyone been watching the early access Standard decks? It feels like it's been so long since standard has seen a power level like this. Genesis Ultimatum + Lotus Cobra + Omnath, Locus of Creation are actually working, and to an insane degree. Mill and Rogue strategies are nuts fast, Ruin Crab ftw, (which mill has never really been a thing before). From what I've been seeing people are going to have to play blue and side in Thassa's Oracle just to win out against, or go heavy heavy low curve aggro beats.

If you've never played standard before, I'd definitely say now is the time to jump in.

Bloodchief's Thirst Thundering Rebuke Roil Eruption Scorching Dragonfire and to a lesser degree Jwari Disruption I'd consider to be main deck staples. You can't get away with playing white without another color in your deck, and you pretty much can't get away with green unless you have a low cost way to fight creatures early on. This is only an early speculation of course.

Sadly I play paper, so I'm going to be waiting for longer than most on it, but cards like Hagra Mauling and even Murderous Rider feel like bulk junk rares Rider being more playable than the other.

I'm very interested in seeing what Cleric's can do. Sweeping boards is ultimately the best response for all three of these decks and if you like playing control, this may be your time to shine in a tier one spotlight with the right build. Some sort of red/blue wizards could be a fringe thing and I see any kind of party decks having a very very hard time surviving.

Seems like multiple people have picked up on mono blue mill, but I don't know how well it will perform and how long it can last.
