Cyberpunk Kamigawa

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

A rumor has started that WotC is, in fact, returning to Kamigawa, which would be some of the most awesome news that this game has had in a long time, except that the rumor also states that the set shall have a steampunk/cyberpunk theme, which would completely alter the plane and essentially turn it into an entirely new plane that bears little resemblance at all to the Kamigawa that many players love and to which they wish to return.

Since this is nothing more than a rumor, at this time, I hope that it is not true, and that, if this game does return to Kamigawa, the plane still bears some resemblance to its original incarnation.

What does everyone else say about this? Have you heard about this rumor, and do you believe that it may be real?

Link to the rumor?

But I would love to go back to Kamigawa. I lost my original collection in a move and only have my old standard kamigawa ninja deck and wither shadowmoor deck left from that time. I'm super nostalgic about Kamigawa. I love rats and ninjas and ninja rats.

I have seen this rumor floating around, but am not sure I buy it. The brief snippets we have learned of Tamiyo's background seem to indicate Kamigawa is much the same as it ever was; I feel if it switched genera we should expect to see that reflected in Kamigawa's planeswalker. (Assuming, of course Wizards has a modicum of respect for consistency in their lore).

Personally, I would not like to see Cyberpunk and Magic mix. Though Magic has had some science fiction elements, it typically does so within the confines of the fantasy genera. Cyberpunk's reliance on the "cyber" aspect of technology stands in a stark contrast with the rest of the game.

Wizards has also gone out of their way to say that Kaladesh was about has 'high tech' as they are comfortable getting, with Portal Second Age retroactively going over that line with guns and the like and Ixaland touching it as cannons are built into the Pirate side of things.

Cyberpunk Kamigawa isn't going to happen.

So the rumours are based off the words "Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty" having websites created by someone. Most likely WotC.

I could be a side set. In the vein of conspiracy or battlebond. Or it could be a new secret lair.

A return to Kamigawa would be cool. A little cyberpunk would be cool. Assuming the rumors are true, of course the return to the Japan-themed set has to be neon cyberpunk and gundams. That wouldn't be a tired cliche at all.

RiotRunner789, here is a link to a site that mentions it.

Caerwyn, I fully agree with you about that, but that could also be an opportunity for WotC to turn "Space: the Convergence" from a joke into a legitimate game.

LeaPlath, that is a great idea; since Kamigawa is still very high on the Rabiah Scale, it would be more sensible to return there in a supplemental set, rather than in a standard-legal set

EleshNornsFs, is that sarcasm? I cannot tell on an internet forum.

Unpopular opinion: I would like to see a cyberpunk magic set. It’s a shame if original Kamigawa is lost for it, but tbh original Kamigawa just isn’t coming back. So a cyberpunk Kamigawa is fine with me.

DemonDragonJ Yes. That was sarcasm.

Back when kamigawa came out it wasn't well received by the community. I personally got a top then took a 6 month break from the game. With commander play booming kamigawa has risen to where it belonged. I hope that if/when we go back it receives the hype its deserved.

I sincerely hope that Kaladesh is, in fact, as far from the traditional sword and sorcery theme they will stray. I wasn’t a fan of the Walking Dead stuff, but whatever. I can work at ignoring that, and if they need money to keep providing me with magic cards, so be it. Dragging all of magic into other realms with ray-guns, refrigerators, rifle cartridges, and satellites will be a serious blow to my interest. I’ve already got Shadowrun, Aliens vs Colonial Marines, and Werewolf The Apocalypse card games. Please don’t.
