Neat variance. The wand holds a very special place in my heart, I will need a couple since I already run chaos wand & this one just has a higher ceiling.

Ancient brass is strange to me. I would've thought it would follow the two-color format like Adult Gold Dragon having . Then copper would seem like & so on

legendofa says... #3

Yeah, that brass dragon bugs me. They're not philosophically any more ambitious, death-oriented, cynical, or self-dependent than any other dragon. They traditionally live in arid, rocky regions, which is not the same thing as a swamp. They have no special talent with necromancy. Why is it black? I would put it at something like for both philosophy and coloration. I want to know the design history of this one.

I had a lot of flavor objections to AFR, and now I'm worried I'm going to have just as many here. I dunno, maybe things are different in Baldur's Gate.

The lands are nice, though.

Much like the original D&D set, I don't really care about this one. But I find it funny that I see on a lot of the spoiler sites that the people who are warm to this set are generally chilly on New Capenna (which I adore). I accept that if I get something 'for me', others get something 'for them'.

Suuuper happy to see reprints of the Battlebond duals!

And I kind of like the Minsc & Boo planeswalker. It's a neat design.

DrukenReaps says... #5

I guess you could focus on the hamster thing with Minsc & Boo but there are fantastic cards to fling at opponents like Thromok the Insatiable and Malignus, I see Minsc & Boo as more of another Brion Stoutarm. Perhaps not more than casually good but certainly fun.

Anyways Elder Brain and Wand of Wonder are going to be great in my Prosper deck!

March 25, 2022 9:06 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #6

DrukenReaps: Good point on the Brion comparsion. I kinda wish the fling ability cost 0 loyalty tho seeing as you're already using a resource, but that might be too aggresive. (Also, as a compromise: Runed Stalactite & Amorphous Axe.)

Ancient Brass Dragon is more of a Vorthos card than anything. In game, they are the weakest among all Metallic dragons. They typically refrain from any sort of combat and prefer to negotiate and barter instead.

Having a Dragon who can not protect itself, doesn't have haste, and chooses to have others fight for it (the ETB return ability) makes a whole lot of sense.

The black is clearly leaning toward the Chaotic side, though I'd have preferred it to be Orzhov for the Chaotic Good.

I don't recall ABDs having necromantic powers so the graveyard recurrence is a bit odd, but I suppose there is limitation with the zones and black already cares about graveyards. That bit was likely a compromise.

What bothers me is the 7/6 statline. ABDs are the WEAKEST and DO. NOT. FIGHT.

So, if this is the baseline as the weakest, WTF DO THE REST LOOK LIKE??

That 7/6 should have been a 4/4. Yes. A 7mv 4/4. Or even a 3/5. But definitely not a 7/6. Even as a 3/5 if you roll a 3, that's still 3 power you can pull on field (assuming you have the appropriate cards in your yard). That gives you a total of 6 power online. The 3/5 and whatever your 3 power you rolled into was.

So yes, 3/5 is perfectly reasonable for this.

Hell, even a 1/5 or even a 0/5.

If your average roll on a d20 is a 10, that's TEN POWER you can pull from ALL graveyards. ABD can literally have 0 power and you'd still be getting tons of value.

And yes, Elder Brains are tied to Brine Pools deep underground in oceanic cavern systems. It should have defender and maybe have some sort of must attack clause where it forces things to attack you, for value.

(Nope, that's an Aboleth. Those are the under-ocean ones. Oops.)

Such as:

  • "Creatures with power less than Elder Brain's must attack you each turn if able. Whenever a creature attacks you, it's controller loses 2 life."

Then set it to maybe a 3/4 with defender. Now anything with power 2 or less is forced to attack you and their controller loses life because of it.

That'd make a lot more sense.

I'd love to see Jon Irenicus come back from Baldur's Gate 2. He could absolutely be a legendary wizard or planeswalker and everything he did would remind me of that amazing/slightly terrifying voice actor who did him in the games. As a villain, the voice was absolutely perfect.

Also, Jan Jansen, because yep.

Yoshimo the reluctant traitor.

Solaufien the ever-flirty (thanks to that crazy crazy mod)

Jaheria the bugged romance that never works...

Baldur's Gate 2 really was the best ever : )

Niko9 man if they actually print Jon Irenicus I might have to retire my Mairsil alter of him :O He is by far my favorite villain. I'd have to play the card regardless of what it does lol

DrukenReaps Right? He was such a good and effective villain.

Spoilers

When you get to the part where you finally meet him at the asylum and he just says "oh, I poisoned you on the boat ride here, now sleep" that was the most legit good bad-guy plans. Like, he was always ten steps ahead of you, but also needed to keep you around, and eventually you claw your way back to really challenge him. That's such good villaining : )

This set's missing for me on multiple fronts. For one my interest in playing Commander has almost evaporated over the past months, and I also just really do not give a hoot about D&D anything. I guess I'll take the battlebond land reprints on the miniscule chance I ever play again, and maybe I'll play the prerelease or a draft at my LGS if my schedule allows.

Elder Brain also annoys me because I think they've been going too overboard on these unfun effects. Which is another reason I don't want to play.

Minsc & Boo is a design I like though.

March 26, 2022 3:08 p.m.

DrukenReaps says... #13

So we know 4 cards and you hate the whole thing? Cool.

March 26, 2022 3:20 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #14

My favorite aspect of the first Commander Legends was the numerous reprints, so the fact that this set is another Dungeons & Dragons crossover has me concerned that the potential for reprints shall be limited, but the fact that WotC is finally reprinting Reflecting Pool is amazing, as that card very dearly needs to be reprinted, again.

March 26, 2022 4:11 p.m.

Gleeock says... #15

SpammyV unfun is very subjective, IMO steal effects aren't all that bad unless they literally rip a resource away without replacing it, ie.. grab a card from your hand or take your permanent from you. This would be more like the exile version of a wheel effect which can probably be "unfun" depending on how you build your decks, I personally don't care if someone plays something of mine as long as I get to resupply/keep my hand or if it pulls a rando of the top of my library (then again I rarely play key combo pieces). It is flavorful to me that Elder Brain will often attack the player with the most knowledge (cards in hand). Boy is that lasting value for you if you get one swing at a player with 7+ in hand.

IMO the dice-roll effects were super fun. Many of them were well done with a good high ceiling to them & a reasonable floor. If the new wand is any indication of the kind of stuff they will continue to do with dice rolling, then count me in on that. Hopefully they don't do too much of a good thing like they did with Krark's thumb & coin flip storm where they just made it so that coin flips basically were no longer chance based at a certain point because they made reflip storm too easy.

March 26, 2022 6:28 p.m.

Gleeock says... #16

More unfun if they keep printing exile + "play as long as in exile" would be adding those to Decree of Annihilation or Worldfire recovery types of decks :)

March 26, 2022 8:11 p.m.

Gleeock says... #17

Though more power to you if you have that kind of time & mana :)

Gleeock says... #18

golgarigirl I'm actually more pumped for Streets of New Capenna as well due to originality & my lack of caring about Baldur's Gate... Though I have hopes for both of these sets to offer alot of multiplayer mechanics. I'm a sucker for scaling multiplayer cards & multiplayer game altering mechanics. Commander legends had all of the monarch courts, which I am still all about - though it had chase cards like: Jeweled Lotus which I feel was this FOMO mistake, which others feel was a wild success. My hope for Capenna is that it is less tribal, more machiavellian politics & just innovative to the respective shards. I have great hope that my beloved will finally not be some sac-focused theme like another Korvald or all the other Jund sac-theme that they keep pigeon-holed.

DemonDragonJ says... #19

I hope that WotC shall reprint Ring of Three Wishes in this set, since the idea of that card was originally a magic item in Dungeons & Dragons, so it would perfectly fit in with the theme of this set.

"the character we got a lot of complaints about not being in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms gets a card" Elminster

May 10, 2022 12:30 p.m.

Oh...Jon Irenicus is an interesting commander. A little less feels bad than The Beamtown Bullies as well since you can't just one-shot people at instant speed with Leveler or Bronze Bombshell. Homeward Path is now in need of a reprint more than ever with all of these donation style commanders popping up.

May 17, 2022 11:23 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #22

Oh hey, this is definently the first time I've seen Jon. Obviously a lot of overlap with Blim, Comedic Genius's creatures. Doesn't seem to be a lot of straightforward Donate effects in blue, but I'm thinking the way to go is exchange effects like Gilded Drake and Puca's Mischief, could be decent value. Would probably want some more pillow fort to compensate for those extra creatures you exchange away since they won't be goaded. Maybe something with self-sacrifice as a drawback, e.g. Drifter il-Dal?

May 17, 2022 12:20 p.m.

Coward_Token - I personally wouldn't build the deck around exchanges since your commander does it for you. I'd just run a lot of evasive creatures to donate/goad, bounce effects and Homeward Path to get things back, some Strionic Resonator effects to double donate, and maybe some combat manipulation like Illusionist's Gambit or Dulcet Sirens to direct the creatures that aren't goaded away from you. Could be an interesting control deck that isn't necessarily removing every threat. It also doesn't fall flat against primarily creature-less decks which is nice.

May 17, 2022 1:21 p.m.

Some interesting spoilers from the stream today.

Bramble Sovereign is a nice reprint

Nautiloid Ship actually seems like a very strong vehicle. Graveyard hate and stealing opponents stuff in one package is strong.

Jaheira's Respite looks like a pretty solid fog/mass ramp spell

Battle Angels of Tyr are just nutty. Myriad is what takes them from cute to actually powerful. Definitely going into my Rograkh and Akroma keywords deck.

Gorion is a Lucky Clover in the command zone which could be cool and powerful.

I am a little worried about the "Background" mechanic. Enchantments are already one of the hardest permanent types to get rid of so giving the ability for them to be in the command zone is a little alarming to me. I get that only specific legendary creatures work with Background, and the none of the Background enchantments so far spoiled jump out to me as busted, but still, I am worried that WotC may be making a similar mistake as to when they allowed certain Planeswalkers to start being commanders.

If we're having a Gate theme then I guess I need to order the Maze's End I was thinking about getting for a cube sooner rather than later.

May 17, 2022 2:22 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #26

Holy balls that's a lot of previewed cards, none of which I've ever seen before.

Mono-colored character commanders + Backgrounds is a good way of creating a new set of Partners without having to worry about synergy around the original ones. In the 99, the backgrounds seem to make pretty good pseudo-Auras for Voltron too.

I liked The Monarch so I expect to like The Initiative as well. The Undercity isn't super exciting (why single target burn and a glass cannon token for an EDH-specific set?) but the final room gives creature beatdown some love at least. I'm hoping that mono-white will receive some strong initiative cards, seeing as it's a color with both good evasive creatures and defense which places it in a good position to both take and keep the intitiative. I also hope there's some better dungeon reward cards this time around.

Bane's Invoker: I get that they wanted to make a mono-colored cycle that included all of the Dead Three, and that Bane is Lawful Evil, but mono-white still feels weird, especially when the flavor text uses the epiteth "The Lord of Darkness".

Abdel: Meh. Flash would have been cool here, especially at that cost.

Lulu: Seeing as wholesome and cute as she's supposed to be, it feels weird that she fits well at the helm of an Aristocrats deck. That smile ain't right either.

Commander Liara Portyr: Mmmm yes, I like this, even if she's slightly expensive. Beatdown support and boros card advantage? And it's impulsive draw where the risk of whiffing is greatly mitigated by built-in ramp, greatly ressembling Prosper, Tome-Bound while still doing it's own thing? Sorry, but allow me to indulge in a "Yasssss queen".

Fang Dragon: While it's at a humble common rarity, I could see this fitting in otherwise high-MV Dragon tribal decks for the decent Adventure part

Elminister: No surprise there. The -3 doesn't seem super appropriate for EDH but w/e, spellslinger scrying tribal sounds neat. Obviously, inspiration can be found in azorius Eligeth, Crossroads Augur decks

Raphael: Still waiting for a proper Demon tribal commander, a simple anthem with an evergreen keyword isn't going to cut it. Less personality than Zurzoth, Chaos Rider too

Myrkul: Hahah persist One with the Stars? That's so weird, I love it. You can tap out your dorks to cast a wrath, then tap their enchantment-copies to keep going!

Mazzy: Sigh, feels like the same mistake as Tiana, Ship's Caretaker; if Mazzy gets hit by a wrath, she's not going to be able to see the Auras fall off. Even if she could, Aura card's reliance on creatures is problematic, since you'll probably find yourself in situations where you first have to spend some mana on casting/creating a creature, then using whatever's left to save just some of the exiled Auras.

Battle Angels: Would it have been too good if it just said "more than you"?

Nautiloid Ship: neat that Vehicles are getting more EDH support, though reliance on mill feels a bit awkward

Tasha: Just one spell per "ultimate" activation! Cheecky synergy with her Laughter. Demon tokens kinda feels like flavor filler and I feel like she could cost one less seeing as she's quite slow and vulnerable, but w/e, still neat

Firkraag: I appreciate a good goader, but the Dragon tribal feels pretty incidental. Works with non-goad forced attacking for both your opponents' creatures (Goblin Spymaster) and your own (Hellraiser Goblin). (No Angel's Trumpet synergy tho.)

Cap' Ng...N'gh...whatever...: Feels like it'll be much more consistent than the often scarily big Umbris, Fear Manifest for Horror tribal

Nalia: Doesn't feel super white-black and go-wide beatdown isn't the best for EDH, but it's nice that party is getting some flavor-approprate love

TypicalTimmy says... #29

Myrkul, Lord of Bones (Abzan God) is very interesting. So it would seem that when that when a nontoken creature you control dies, you may exile it and create a token copy of it (Nice!) except it is an enchantment and loses all other types?

So... it no longer is a creature? Hmm. There are definitely ways to utterly abuse this.

Some cards who require combat in order to be effective would fail, while others would become exceedingly powerful. For example, Archfiend of Depravity is now significantly harder to remove from the battlefield once it is an enchantment and not a creature.

Similarly, because these exiled creatures ETB as token enchantments, Anointed Procession and Parallel Lives as well as the rest of them all kick off. Something such as the stapled budget Avenger of Zendikar would ETB as an enchantment token, and you could get two, four or even eight of them. Then, when a land ETB, your enormous army of plants get a +1/+1 counter for EACH Avenger in play.

And you wanna hear the dumbest thing about it? Nothing specifically says under your control. I bet that you can put a creature under any player's control. I'm sure there are fringe things you can do to really abuse that.

I don't think it is. Have you ever donated a creature with Quicksilver Amulet? Because that's worded the exact same way, and I've never heard someone state that if it's from your hand, it wouldn't have to enter the battlefield under your control as well (exceptions like Xantcha, Sleeper Agent not considered, of course)

SpammyV says... #34

The more that I think about, the more that The Initiative just seems... odd. Venture cards from AFR will help you complete The Undercity, but none of them allow you to enter The Undercity. The Initiative will let you complete the AFR dungeons, but anything that makes you Take The Initiative or just still having it at your upkeep without entering a different dungeon will force you into The Undercity.

Mostly it's just that your decision on which dungeon you want to select are being forced. Commander Legends already had a little insert talking about how to draft the set and use the Prismatic Piper, so it seems to me like they could have put in a paragraph saying "In this draft format, the only dungeon is The Undercity. But in a normal Commander game, you can venture into any dungeon you choose."

All that being said, I'd be willing to try Commander games with a house rule that the first person to deal combat damage takes The Initiative and gets it going into the game. But that's just because I tend to like games with combat more than just sitting around waiting for someone to find their two card combo.

May 18, 2022 1:14 p.m.

Niko9 says... #35

I was super hyped on the preview of a Baldur's Gate set, but now, I don't know. It's like they wanted to make the anti-AFR, which is sad because I really liked AFR. Where forgotten realms focused on interesting mechanics, flavor, more flavor, in a lot of ways it felt like the first time you get the player's manual in DnD. Like, all of the fan favorite characters weren't there, it wasn't super powerful, and it wasn't the level 20 endgame; it was the start of the adventure.

But, so far at least, this feels like they wanted to make a powerful commander set, throw in all the characters, and for me who loves the games, it feels like these just aren't the same characters. Bhall, out of all the cards, why is there Bhall? In the first two games and the SoA expansion, the entire story was that Bhall was gone. He's the most, doesn't appear in this movie, character that they have. Mazzy is a generic auras-matter creature, and she is far from generic. Imoen has ward? She has...what? She's the most, under the influence of magic, character in the franchise's history, and then on top of that she also does generic things. Irenicus, donates? Irenicus is the person who takes people, that's like, kinda his whole thing. He should something like a "take control of creature" card that then he himself becomes more powerful when that effect triggers.

It just, I don't know. Things in AFR fit so, so well sometimes, but this is hard to watch. The first 2 Baldur's Gates were astounding for the time and this took all the nostalgia and gives you back none of the heart of the story and characters. Minsc is okay I guess, but they should have made Boo the planeswalker and Minsc the big guy who carries Boo around.

Coward_Token says... #36

Dungeon Delver and Imoen makes me fear for white's Initiative prospects

Flaming Fist: With Duelist's Heritage and Blood Mist in mind, I kinda feel like red deserved this one.

Korlessa: Feels weird, since there's not a whole lot of (good) Dragons in Simic, and even if there were, it's not a tribe known for its cheap costs which is what's preferable with Future Sight-type abilities. I do expect the set to expand the tribe a decent bit though.

May 18, 2022 4:01 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #37

SpammyV: Yeah that's fair. They could have made it like

Whenever you take the initiative or at the beginning of your upkeep, venture into the dungeon. You may venture into the Undercity this way.

But yeah, probably felt like four dungeons would have been overcomplicated

Some fun Background pairings: (All hyperlinks, not hover images. You'll need to click to open.)

There's obviously more options, but it's 3am and I need to get to bed. But these were my first initial thoughts.

I'll probably build a really dumb and janky Wilson deck later, although I already did build a Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig back when Eldraine first released, and Wilson here would essentially be a clone of it so I'd probably get too bored, too easily.

Lae'Chef would be super fun. I haven't built Selensya in a very long time. So she might be the first one I'll tackle.

Evil Volo just looks like a blast, although Dimir isn't known for being super creature focused, in most cases.

I think Livaan-Fist has some real keen potential as a Boros deck. Almost like Feather, the Redeemed on steroids.

May 19, 2022 4:01 a.m. Edited.

Mahadi, while essentially a retread of Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge that also triggers off of tokens, has me interested. I am not sure yet if I prefer them to Juri, Master of the Revue for rakdos treasure, but I like them.

Korlessa is interesting for dragon tribal. Not only is the (limited) Future Sight effect always powerful, but they are a 2 cmc dragon, which is great for a generally 5+ cmc tribe. My Intet, the Dreamer dragon tribal deck approves.

I wish Duque was Jeskai, but granting myriad to random creatures is pretty cool and can lead to a bunch of shenanigans.

Wilson is hilarious

Basilisk Collar is another nice reprint. Hopefully they keep up with these good reprint choices.

SpammyV and Coward_Token, my understanding is that they didn't want you to be able to enter other dungeons with Initiative in limited and that they wanted everyone going through the same dungeon. Other than that though, I haven't heard a good reason as to why they don't want folks going into other dungeons with Initiative. It still mostly works with Venture and older dungeons so it's not completely parasitic.

Gond's Gate. It's a Gate. It makes Gates you control enter untapped. It taps for colorless or any color a Gate you control could produce.

The tingle tells me that all my draft chaff speculative buyouts are increasing value by the second.

May 19, 2022 2:11 p.m.

Well, the Maze's End price spike is starting. Interesting that it had a spike just before New Capenna and then came down. Did people think gates would be in that set or something?

Gond's Gate looks good. I wonder who the new gates commander will be now that Golos is banned (such a stupid banning). Perhaps we will see one spoiled in this set?

Alaundo is reeeeeeaaaaallly interesting. Jhoira of the Ghitu was one of my first commanders, but she is too slow by today's standards. Alaundo is in a stronger color pair and you can cascade up the mana curve if you order your "suspended" creatures correctly. I like this one.

Jan Jensen is also really cool. Definitely breakable with Clock of Omens and a card like Liquimetal Torque to turn Jan into an artifact. But I just like him because he is the first commander since Feldon of the Third Path that makes me want to jam my deck full of Phyrexian Triniform-esq artifact creatures and keep bringing them back. His ability doesn't actually bring them back like Feldon's does, but something about him made me instantly think about that strat. Make a legendary Goblin Welder you cowards!

What would be his right hand (left side of the frame) has his hand physically backwards. That position can not be made by the right hand, only by the left hand.

Okay, just caught up with previews.

First disclaimer: I know a good amount about D&D in general, and almost nothing about Baldur's Gate in particular, so I think I missing a lot of the flavor choices. With that in mind...

Initiative/Undercity feels like flavor at the expense of clarity. What's the connection? Why does this trigger with a super-specific name refer only to this action with a different super-specific name, which is actually a subset of a different mechanic? It feels like they were just trying to show off this new trick. "If you're already doing this one thing, keep doing it, but if you're not, do this other thing."

Myrkul, Lord of Bones is not what I expected from a Constellation commander. This one's going to be fun to build around.

Can a background be included in a deck normally, without being a commander? I don't see any reason it wouldn't be, but is there any hidden rules baggage?

For all the reprints Wayfarer's Bauble has, I'm surprised it's above $1, and at common. It's colorless ramp that doesn't use a land drop, but is it in higher demand than I thought?

Thrakkus: It's funny to me that his title comes from his mundane profession, rather than him being sone kind of accomplished warrior. Anyway, basically a slimmed Atarka, World Render. It's fine.

Veteran Soldier: solid in the 99 for cheap-ish go-wide commanders

Raggadragga: Go-wide agro dork tribal? Heh. However, there's some tension between the second and the third ability, since you'll probably want/need to tap your dorks to cast for seven+, which means they won't be able to attack. I kinda wish the second ability was replaced by a dork-only version of my custom card: Unyielding Druid

Wyll: Quite aggresively costed Krark's Thumb-like dice tribal commander with a customizable second color.

legendofa: Yes, you can have a Background in the 99:

CHOOSE A BACKGROUND A Background enchantment that's in your commander's color identity can, of course, be played in a Commander deck just like any other card.
