Dawn 3WW

I quite like these designs. Though I agree the text is a bit odd. I'd play these though.

Woah, just saw the new ones

So the color on the card is on the bottom now. That's an interesting twist.

My $0.02 on the Invocations: The artwork is generally amazing. But the borders are absolutely hideous ... like, 1st day ever running Photoshop hideous.

March 28, 2017 7:46 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #4

The text to me is what kills it for me

I can hardly read the bloody things. Kinda important if you're going to collect these cards

Phaetion says... #6

Wait a minute...3 are missing, or am I delusional?

Regardless; I'd collect these if they weren't foil. Grrr...

March 28, 2017 8:08 p.m.

DruneGrey says... #7

Remember when the inventions didn't look great until we saw them with the foiling? At least that was how I remembered then

March 28, 2017 8:41 p.m.

Ceondoc says... #8

Linkdude74 ah ok. I was confused.

March 28, 2017 8:50 p.m.

even if the foil makes them look better, all the past masterpieces looked ok without the foiling, like the inventions series for kaladesh was reminiscent of artifacts, but the border was not seemingly taking over the card, in fact, the border only complemented the card itself, same with zendikar expeditions- the art was the main part of the card, the text was easy to read.

With these amonkhet invocations, the border takes up much of the card, there are additional runes / symbols taking up the title, making it hard to read, and the art is small.

saj0219 says... #10

Phaetion I'm going to guess the missing three are new cards from amonkhet that they're not ready to spoil yet (if indeed three are missing)... I was just thinking about how it was a bit weird that none of the masterpieces this time around were new cards, so this explanation seems to make sense

March 28, 2017 9:13 p.m.

jchudz says... #11

why are so many of them just counterspells? also, i feel bad for anyone who runs into worship at the prerelease.

clayperce says... #14

That is some SERIOUS dog-breath!

March 28, 2017 10:54 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #15

Those masterpieces are amazing! I really like how they are designed to resemble ancient Egyptian tablets, and the artwork is also very nice. I do hope that I open at least one at the prerelease!

March 28, 2017 11:14 p.m.

Well, that boarder on those Invocations is atrocious. It completely overtakes the artwork on most of them which is sad because that art is fantastic (just look at that Pact of Negation). Also, those hieroglyphics in the name make it rather difficult to read.

Also, also, I have seen some images of these cards showing off how they look in real life and they still look pretty bad. I applaud Wizards for trying something new though.

Knowing that I'll probably open like 10 of them...

A friend of mine was comparing them to this:

DuTogira says... #17

If they're anything like mew, that means they're just collectors items that will never see actual play.
Not really the point of a premium product.

jchudz says... #18

@Linkdude74 not being able to lose to damage in a format built on creature combat means that if it hits the board you probably won't lose.

00xtremeninja says... #19

hmmmmmmm. will this version of Force of Will be the cheapest because people will find it so ugly?

It's a cute gimmick, it really is. I would happily take a Wrath of God and if they reprint Damnation in the set after this, then that'd be cool. I thought the inventions looked like ass at first, but they grew on me. I think these will grow on me too, initially as a wart, skintag, or cyst type of way, but then I will accept it and like it.

March 29, 2017 1:17 a.m.

well some of the gold framing on the invocations could be nice with the foil

March 29, 2017 1:22 a.m.

jethstriker says... #21

I'm missing something here. What is the unifying theme of these masterpieces? The Zendikar Expeditions are lands and the Kaladesh Inventions are artifacts.

March 29, 2017 1:35 a.m.

Bovine073 says... #22

00xtremeninja

Damnation will almost for sure never be printed in a standard set again because it contains the word "regenerated", which has been phased out by wotc.

jethstriker

The masterpiece series is called something like "Invocations" (powerful magical spells) or something like that for AKH.

March 29, 2017 2:01 a.m.

jethstriker says... #23

Bovine073

Well most of these are indeed magical spells, but some of them are creatures. But then in MTG creatures are also spells, so that "invocation" theme including creatures also makes sense. I just find it pales in comparison to the previous two in terms of a certain theme. Kind of like for example, the masterpiece for this block could be destruction / mass destruction spells since one of them is named Hour of Devastation.

March 29, 2017 2:15 a.m.

Boza says... #24

I think the theme this time is "stuff that makes at least some amount of sense in Egytian theme".

Anyways, I like it when wizards is taking bold steps in new directions, like these masterpieces. Good job, Wizards!

March 29, 2017 2:29 a.m.

EpicFreddi says... #25

Ill bring my Mew to the Prerelease, thanks for the idea. :D

March 29, 2017 5:15 a.m.

The boarders are pretty accurate to the ancient Egyptian color-scheme, and represent the Egyptian monolithic architecture style quite well imo. They may not appeal to everyone's personal tastes, but they are definitely true to the style/theme of the set. I consider them a win, and wouldn't be unhappy opening any of them :)

March 29, 2017 6:38 a.m.

So, I agree that they do fit an Egyptian theme... but good god...

They did not need to put hieroglyphics before and after the names and card types, especially with the text they chose. It makes it very unreadable.

The border design is pretty OK, but I hate how the mana costs look so washed out.

I'm pretty "meh" about the Invocations as a whole. It's good they are reprinting Force of Will, but personally I would have loved to see Damnation with Nicol Bolas on the artwork.

Argy says... #28

So now Wizards is going to make everyone play with their graveyards, cause you just KNOW that Delerium decks will get a giant boost out of this set.

I'm already underwhelmed.

Might just be burnt out. In any case, so far I have yet to be inspired to build by anything in this set.

March 29, 2017 8:26 a.m.

GobboE says... #29

@ Boza : I am with you on the flashback the brick counters :) ...though it will have to compete with the filibuster counters of Azor's Elocutors

March 29, 2017 8:39 a.m.

AgentGreen says... #30

Argeaux I think its too early to speculate what is good and what is garbage in this set

Spoilers start next week so we can make our determinations then. I'm eager to see what the new Gids and Lilly will be like

March 29, 2017 8:47 a.m.

00xtremeninja says... #31

Bovine073 I was talking about it being reprinted as a masterpiece.

I havent' read a single comment yet - are we ranting about masterpieces :p

March 29, 2017 9:05 a.m.

Ceondoc says... #33

I love the new Daze art. It looks so good. The border also looks good with it.

March 29, 2017 9:07 a.m.

Linkdude74 says... #34

jchudzRight. Why is not being able to lose bad?

March 29, 2017 9:22 a.m.

Linkdude74 says... #35

Just play worship, point out that your deck has more cards than opponent and gg

March 29, 2017 9:47 a.m.

EpicFreddi says... #36

Plottwist: Your opponent plays mill and soon your library will be smaller. :D
Worship is the only card i have interesting in. Force and WoG look cool, but i dont like the borders.

March 29, 2017 9:55 a.m.

Linkdude74 says... #37

Lol yeah. But if they're playing mill you're then more likely to win through combat damage. :P Also I'd probably play 45 to avoid dying to mill as easily.

March 29, 2017 10 a.m.

Argy says... #38

AgentGreen I'm not speculating about playing with Graveyards.

It's right there in the new cards.

Not even speculating on the set, just saying I'm not inspired yet.

March 29, 2017 10:19 a.m.

Argy says... #39

I love the new Masterpieces.

They look very Egyptian, with almost 3D borders.

This is the first time I have liked how Masterpieces look.

March 29, 2017 10:32 a.m.

slightly crying about this FOW. Just picked up 2 alliance FOW for legacy last week and now so sad. Also, why are like 50% of the masterpieces counterspells/U control? (forshadowing heavy control in this set/block?)

my commander decks would be happy but whyyy wizards.

March 29, 2017 11:42 a.m.

AwezomePozzum says... #41

Honestly, I think they will look much better on release. That way, we can actually see the foiling (hoping they don't mess it up this time). I'm sure that it will be much more pleasing to see them in person than in a card image gallery. I still have an issue with the border, but I'm holding out hope they'll be better than we think.

March 29, 2017 11:42 a.m.

AwezomePozzum says... #42

Especially Pact of Negation, I mean, dang.

enter image description here

March 29, 2017 11:47 a.m.

Dangggg, the Diabolic Intent and Entomb art is so beautiful and thematically fitting.

I really think these could have been such a success if they removed the unreadable symbols in the name, but kept the hieroglyphic style text that actually conveys the card name, as well as shrink the borders back down to a normal size. That way they still retain the Egyptian feel to the cards, but don't shrink and obscure the awesome artwork.

It's a shame because I think the Expeditions and Masterpieces were executed well.

March 29, 2017 11:59 a.m.

The magic story confirms it. Lol. Just about. Half its art is in the story.

March 29, 2017 1:35 p.m.

Phaetion says... #47

I was thinking...I wonder if the Amonkhet Gods will make use of the Brick Counters as a way to turn into creatures. So, they'd be legendary artifact creatures that start out as artifacts, then become creatures after reaching some number of brick counters.

What is exert?!

March 29, 2017 1:50 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #49

The_Traitor Exert is a new mechanic that allows you declare on an attacking creature for extra stuff. The tradeoff: It doesn't untap on your next untap phase

March 29, 2017 1:55 p.m.

The_Traitor says... #50

Ah okay thanks AgentGreen. This actually makes this demon strong, normally he will get 8 damage through. And you may untap him with some effects each turn so you can get 8 damage per turn trough...
