Companion Features Are Now Supported For Your Decklist

With new mechanics comes new features. Companions are the most recent big mechanic that your deck now supports displaying.

To tag a card with companion as your companion, it must be in your sideboard first and foremost. Then, attach CMPN to the end of the card name. Like so.

2x Lurrus of the Dream-Den *CMPN*

Note that the card must be a companion in order for this to properly work.

When you create the deck or add the companion to an existing deck, your deck will be automatically added to your companion's hub. You will be able to search this hub for decks like any other hub.

Your deck will also check legality with the card that you have selected as your companion. if there's any bugs with this, do report them so we can make it work properly.

You should also use this feature to shame those that use Lurrus of the Dream-Den :)

Great new feature, thanks for being so fast.

Cool, but I don't actually think this is very necessary: a companion doesn't have a special place in your sideboard. It's just another ol' card in you sideboard with a mechanic that you can choose to reveal at the beginning of the game and can cast if you do.

Companion deck legality is very much awesome! Great job!

April 30, 2020 6:01 a.m.

-Arcanity- at the start of the game you have to declare it as your companion, ikoria is actually releasing cards that look like this some_text

its so everyone knows it is your companion, and its in the sideboard but the starting deck follows the restictions of the companion. it is a great update for the new mechanic because it has its own zone

Nice! I tried playtesting a companion deck but the companion didn't show up anywhere at all?

I had one in a commander deck so I just took the solution of putting it in the command zone. But thanks for updating this so fast - I'm really impressed!

Dunno if this is the right forum, but why is my Zirda deck not legal ? It runs fine in mtg:a, so it can't be legality issues :o

This feature is really cool and all (thank you!), but one of my decks has the message "This deck is not valid to have Jegantha, the Wellspring as a companion". This is weird, as Jegantha, the Wellspring can be a companion. Furthermore, my deck also satisfies Jeganth's companion condition.

What's going on?

DanMcSharp says... #14

I wish it also added a function to fetch it from the sideboard when play-testing.

April 30, 2020 9:34 a.m.

Boza says... #15

Jegantha has by far the trickiest legality check to code out of all the companions. I would assume, the special mana like hybrid or phyrexian might be tripping the system.

This sort of works. It features as a companion on the deck page, but then if there any copies in the deck it's says it's not legal. My understanding is you may have copies three (other) copies in your deck that act normally. Also, not sure if you're getting to this, but in play test you can't get your companion onto the battlefield from your sb. So I was leaving one in the deck (and putting it back on the bottom when I drew it normally).

April 30, 2020 10 a.m. Edited.

Boza says... #19

TreyV - not all the companions are legal to play in the deck and as a companion. For example, Lurrus of the Dream-Den does not comply with its own rule, so it is not legal to be played in both the deck and as a companion. However, Gyruda is OK to play in the main deck, because it complies with its own rule.

OK as a companion and in the deck at the same time:

  • Gyruda, Obosh, Yorion, Jegantha, Kaheera, Keruga, Zirda

Conditionally allowed in the main deck and as a companion:

  • Umori - if you are playing only creatures.
  • Lutri - no more than 1 copy.

Not allowed as both the companion and in the deck:

  • Lurrus

It looks like Zirda is not seeing Equipment as having an activated ability. Rule 702.6a states that Equip counts as an activated ability.

My commander deck shows that companion is illegal even when put in the sideboard with the appropriate tag. It is definitely an error that needs to be fixed.

Companion now shows in it's own area when playtesting if it's been tagged properly. If your deck shows the Companion area but no Companion in it, saving the deck will fix it.

pizzanui says... #26

My deck says that it can't have Kaheera the Orphangaurd as its companion, but there is not one single creature card in the deck that isn't a cat. I suspect it may be bugged — maybe it's seeing Beast Within and Generous Gift as violations of the companion condition, even though they shouldn't be?

pizzanui Enral thanks for the bug reports, we sent a fix for them. It might take some time to propagate so your decks might show as illegal for the next couple minutes.

April 30, 2020 5:28 p.m.

Naksu Ikoria hasn’t technically been released yet, so the cards aren’t legal in any format. I’m not sure if that’s what’s being checked though. If the cards register as being legal, but the deck still doesn’t, it could be a matter of cycling not registering as an activated ability, my guess being that they wrote the program to search for a colon to determine if an ability is an activated ability.

TreyV says... #29

Yay, companion card appears in its own spot in play test!

April 30, 2020 7:03 p.m.

TreyV says... #30

Think I've found a bug. For Lurrus the system is ignoring Planeswalkers when looking at your permanent cmc's. The other types it's checking fine.

April 30, 2020 7:19 p.m.

ivaggione says... #31

TreyV thanks for taking the time to research the bug, we sent a fix and will be up in some minutes.

April 30, 2020 9:14 p.m.

ivaggione I believe equipment might also fall under what I said about the program not finding cycling possibly due to a lack of colons. There is a chance the Unearth ability might do this as well, if reminder text isn’t checked.

I have a current EHD list with Lurrus as the companion. As Lurrus reads, permanents of 2 or less are allowed. All permanents listed in the deck are of casting cost 2 or less, however, the site says that the deck is not legal to have Lurrus as the companion. Am I missing something here in my list, or is there a bug?

April 30, 2020 11:29 p.m.

shivanlord says... #34

It also appears my Umori EDH deck is also not recognizing properly as having a legal companion. This one, might be due to Bow of Nylea being seen as an artifact and not an enchantment in addition?

May 1, 2020 2:41 a.m.

Olibob says... #35

Kaheera, the Orphanguard has a bug: it doesn't recognise Changelings, which have all creature types in all zones, so should meet the deck building requirements to my knowledge. Example here.

May 4, 2020 6:54 a.m.

Umori also reports as being illegal in decks with all all creatures and lands if some of the creatures are artifact creatures.

Since adding Kaheera the Orphanguard as the companion to my commander deck, it says it is not legal. All the creatures have the Cat subtype.

Zirda, The Dawnwaker seems to be bugged. Here are a list of the cards that should be legal with it, but aren't in my deck - https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/shabralda/ . They are all permanents with activated abilities.

emmastar9 and CommanderStories: Can you please make a minor edit to your deck and then change it back? You just need to make a save for the legality checker to recheck your deck. As I made copies of both your decks and it was saying it was perfectly legal. Also you too shivanlord, as I noticed your lurrus deck was behaving the same way.

brningpyre: thanks for reporting this!

May 7, 2020 7:45 p.m.

My deck is still reporting illegal companion even after editing and saving. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mutation-creature-feature-1/?cb=1588861142
